Mormon Church Rebuilt After 2007 Arson

Updated: Saturday, 24 Oct 2009, 11:06 PM MDT
Published : Saturday, 24 Oct 2009, 11:05 PM MDT

MESA - Two years after an arson fire destroyed a Mormon church in Mesa, the rebuilding is complete and parishioners are getting ready to attend services.

This weekend, the church located at Country Club Dr. and McLellan is back open.

"We're celebrating the reconstruction of the building that burned two years ago," says church leader Craig Alstrom.

After the fire in Nov. 2007, the steeple was all that was left of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mesa. The congregation vowed to rebuild.

"From what I can tell everyone is really excited they're humble, grateful, and mostly excited that they have a new building to meet in."

Saturday morning, crowds gathered at an open house for the new $5 million house of worship. For the past few years, members had to travel to attend services at other Mormon churches in the valley.

Federal investigators are still trying to determine who set the church on fire.

Parker,

I didn't send you anything for your 1 year mark but I wrote the following poem. I hope you like it.

You've been on a mission for nearly a year
Stepped forward with faith so that others may hear
The Plan of Salvation, or Solve-ation you'd say
The plan that will lead them to exaltation one day
You live in a land far different than your own
But your love of our Savior makes that land your home
One year has gone by, one more year to go
I'm proud of you, and son, I want you to know
I miss you every moment of every minute of every day
But your service to God I would not sway
So burn a shirt if you can, I'll burn one too
Be careful not to burn one still buttoned on you
Fill each day with experience, faces to remember
A mission you can celebrate each 5th of November

Love,
Dad

I'm proud of you, and son, I want you to know
I miss you every moment of every minute of every day
But your service to God I would not sway
So burn a shirt if you can, or give one as a good deed
It will bring you a smile, helping a brother in need
Fill each day with experience, faces to remember
A mission you can celebrate each 5th of November

Subject: This is not bigger than you

Parker,

You will be a great trainer... ...what "seems" bigger than you is not - as long as you believe in you and are doing the Lords work... ...calling upon God for guidance. Here are the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Look at step 2... ...In the 12 step program that was used in ADA-M (Alcoholics, Drugs Anonymous-Mormon) the phrase "a Power greater than ourselves" was replaced with "God, through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ" so it read "Came to believe that God, through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, could restore us to sanity." Parker, I know you are not insane. The definition of insanity is Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. So if you keep thinking this is bigger than you, it will be, but if you realize that:

a) You have been set apart by those in authority to act in God's name to perform these duties.

b) You are not alone:
   - You have the Spirit to guide you
   - You have the Mission President to guide you
   - I am here for you - Praying for you, believing in you
   - All you friends and family believe in you
   - God and Jesus know your trials, what you are facing, and They believe in you. You are not expected to be

perfect... ...just do your best... ...it's a growing time.

c) Remember when you were first in the MTC and wrote:

   The food provides physical nourishment
   The scriptures provide Spiritual nourishment
   The language provides frustration
   And the Lord provides hope

I remember recently you wrote on the difficulty of trying to write in English because you had grown accustomed to writing in Russian. The Lord provides hope.

d) I called Brother Boyd Ferguson, my Ward Mission Leader and asked him for some advice to give you and he reminded me that
   1) Fear comes from the adversary
   2) Many great men come to situations where they were not sure what to do:
      - Nephi wasn't sure how to get the plates from Laban - but - 1 Nephi 3:7
basically states that no trial will be placed before us without the Lord
providing a way for us to make it through
      - When the Jaredites were preparing the boats they didn't know how they were
going to breathe so they asked who? That's right - the Lord - and he gave them
the answer. And then when the Lord was inquired about lighting He said
"What would ye have me do?" and Jared or was it the brother of Jared ?
anyways one of them said "I have these stones and if you touch them then they
will be filled with your light and we will be able to place them in the boats so
      we can see."
      - Joseph Smith - when he wasn't sure which church to join - to whom did he
take his inquiry? When the brethren were leaving the mess of chewing tobacco
and smoking - to whom did he take his inquiry?

e) Remember what training techniques helped you when you first got there as well as ask Elder Greenie what he thinks will help you to help him become a first rate missionary - just like you have become.

Parker - your gonna do great - Let me re-phrase that - You are doing great. We are all excited for you.

One last thing - this from the story of Dr. Bob - the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous - the last sentence in that story Dr. Bob states: "Your Father In Heaven will never let you down."

12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous

1.. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol-that our lives had become unmanageable.
2.. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3.. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4.. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5.. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6.. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7.. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8.. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9.. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10.. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11.. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12.. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

This from Hillside Ward's Ward Mission Leader

Dear Ward Missionaries,

Thanks to each of you for your service. When we are in the service of others we are serving the Lord.

We have been blessed with many baptisms this past year. There are a few wards in our stake that have not had any convert baptisms so far this year... I never want to take for granted the Lord's generosity in my life.

Please come & join us at the baptisms tonight and I know that you will feel the Spirit in a powerful way and your life will be blessed.

Love,

Bro. Ferguson

 Parker,

I Love You... ...and one of my many thanks this Thanksgiving was that you and Kristi picked me to be your father. My roommates - did I tell you I had roommates? I told about Scot and Ruth and their daughter Reese awhile back when I went to their house and shared my testimony, "The Restoration" video, gave them a Book of Mormon and ended the visit with prayer. - They are now my roommates. Ruth prepared a delicious turkey with all the trimmings. Kristi stopped by for a half-hour or maybe a bit longer. David Kingsley was with her - that reminds me - he was expecting his mission call the next day. Let me check to see if it's up on Facebook. Colorado, Colorado Springs. Spanish Speaking. March 3rd. - This has got to be great news for him - he was hoping for a Spanish Speaking mission.

----------------------------------------------------

When I put the picture of you and Elder Tilgner from transfer day November 13 off President an Sister Fry's blog up at Facebook - my Catholic friend (Still working on that - not the friend part - the Catholic part) Laura in Richmond, VA commented:

"I will make you fishers of men" "go out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch"

and her comment on the picture of you and some other elders from same day, same blog:

"Fine looking Apostles."

I agree with her.

----------------------------------------------

I love the way you said:

"I love seeing the Spirit work with people. A change takes place. It's magical...but it's not magic. Just the love of God being felt by those present."

One of many quotes to remember... when you become a member of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles people will want to know about your mission experiences... ...not that they don't already.

---------------------------------------------------------

On Facebook Justin wrote:

Good morning and happy Monday. "Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." — Muriel Strode

To which I replied:

Good Monday Morning to you as well...

If Muriel strode where there was no path... ...what did she leave a trail of?

Some paths are good, others not so good... now the question is "Are we really following a path or are we forging our own as we view the paths left by others, borrowing that which is good, for we see that it may help to bridge future uncertainties?"

To paraphrase one whose path I have borrowed from many times...

"Travel a path of heart... ...as opposed to a path of convenience" ~~ Daniel Grayling Fogelberg

and he was probably borrowing from the path of Carlos Castaneda

A Path With Heart by Carlos Castaneda

You must always keep in mind that a path is only a path. Each path is only one of a million paths. If you feel that you must now follow it, you need not stay with it under any circumstances. Any path is only a path. There is no affront to yourself or others in dropping a path if that is what your heart tells you to do. But your decision to keep on a path or to leave it must be free of fear and ambition. I caution you: look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself and yourself alone this one question. Does this path have a heart? All paths are the same. They lead nowhere. They are paths going through the brush or into the brush or under the brush of the Universe. The only question is: Does this path have a heart? If it does, then it is a good path. If it doesn’t, then it is of no use.

-------------------------------------------------

I was looking through the book "The Ninth Temple: A Light In The Desert Mesa, Arizona, 1927-2002, 75 Years" and guess what I saw. Nope, not The Good, The Bad and The Lizard. It was a picture of your Great-Grandmother Edna Kempton Larson - the same picture that you used to sketch from. The article in the book was about the temple presidents. The president at that time was Junius E. Driggs, and Edna served as Matron from 1979 until he was released in 1980. I don't remember the exact dates and I let Kristi take the book because she was going to the Campbell Family Reunion and I thought others may want to see it... ...if they had not already. I had not read the entire article but as I look on the web I see that the Temple Matron is the wife of the Temple President - so I'm guessing that President Driggs wife passed away in 1979 and Edna was called to serve as Matron. And President Driggs is one of our distant cousins.

Don't know what time you read your emails but it's 11:08 am there now so I hope you haven't yet.

I love you... ...you are doing great!

Love,
Dad

Twas The Day Before Christmas

Twas the day before Christmas and all across the world
The Kingdom of God was being unfurled.

Missionaries of every kind were spreading the word;
“Jesus is The Christ!” to those who’d not heard.

The Book of Mormon placed in each backpack with care,
With faith there’ll be someone to receive it out there.

The missionaries, that morn, knelt in prayer by their beds,
While visions of baptisms danced in their heads.

And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
With presents on the floor we continued to wrap.

When outside on the steps there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the floor to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The sun on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre like diamonds to objects below.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But two young men in suits, with a smile ear to ear.

I opened the door and invited them in.
They taught us of Jesus and repentance of sin.

Of how Joseph, in the grove had knelt down to pray.
Of Christ‘s church being restored in these latter-days.

Of Moroni, of Peter, of James and John too.
Of John, The Baptist, our testimonies grew.

They came back and taught us again an again.
We wanted to be baptized, they asked us when.

We now are members in a ward that’s close by.
Each year, 'round Christmas, tears of joy fill our eyes.

Thankful those young men came to our door.
And taught how our lives could be filled with much more.

Knowing Christ was born and will banish Satan’s strife.
A Merry Christmas to all, Exaltation, Eternal Life.

Parker and Kristi,

I shared my testimony and poem "Twas The Day Before Christmas" in Fast and Testimony Meeting today.

This past Wednesday the Ferguson's and I met with Jade, a 10 year old who recently joined the church, and went over the Creation and the Atonement... ...well that's what I went over with her. I said the opening prayer and and Jade said a beautiful prayer to close our meeting. The Spirit was sweet...

Love,
Dad

The following is from the Hillside Ward Bishopric

More Diligent and Concerned at Home

Elder Bednar recently reminded us that we must be more diligent and concerned at home in order to build ZION more readily in our lives. “May every spouse, every child, and every parent be blessed to communicate and receive love, to bear and be edified by strong testimony, and to become more consistent in the seemingly small things that matter so much.”

As a bishopric, we testify that if we will consistently express and show our love our homes will have a greater spirit of peace. We also testify that as we share and live our testimony in our homes our lives will be blessed. Don’t be afraid to formally (and informally) share testimony. As we do so, our commitment to the Savior’s gospel will increase.

Our families will avoid many trials and problems and will be more able to handle other trials that may come our way as we become consistent in these simple steps. We invite each family to consider making goals to improve our lives as the prophets have counseled. We love you and appreciate the opportunity to serve.

Love,
The Hillside Bishopric

Parker,

Quick email so you get it this week.

Ich lieb dich. (If you don't know, ask Elder Tilgner.)

Watched the First Presidency's Christmas Devotional last week.

Met with Jade again - 10 yr old convert girl - she's gonna be a great missionary one day - strong, sweet testimony. Prior week she hadn't been reading her scriptures daily because she didn't have time. Suggested she schedule 5 minutes a day, same time each day, to read. This week she said she's been reading every day. AWESOME!!!

Lehi Stake has 40 CONVERT baptisms so far in 2009 - 21 are from Hillside Ward with another scheduled for this next Saturday.

Went to Tithing Settlement Yesterday - I'm a little behind but was marked as a full tithe payer because it will be full before the end of the year.

Went to see Ray Boyd - a convert - baptized in our ward - Hillside Ward - Saturday - I was one of the witnesses.

Meghan - Sandi's daughter - was married Saturday Morning in the Mesa AZ Temple - to Austin McNaughton. Went to the reception Saturday Night. More on that later.

Your Uncle Roger picked me up at 6:30 am this morning to attend the Annual Stake High Priests Quorum Meeting. Guess who I saw... ...your Principal from Franklin Elementary - Mr. Mason - or should I say President Mason - He is the High Priest Group Leader in one of the wards in Lehi Stake. Went up and talked with him after the meeting. He remembered you and Kristi and said to tell you Hello!!!

Went to Church 1:30-4:30 today. Let my High Priest group leader know that I have not yet been called to be a home teacher and of my desire be one. (Remember the flip chart I made for home teaching?)

Went to a Stake Christmas sing-a-long at 7:00 tonight... each ward had their choir sing a Christmas song... as one ward choir would be leaving the choir loft the congregation would sing one verse of a Christmas song while another ward choir was filling the loft. I sat next to Bishop Opie (Once a bishop always a bishop) - He told me I need to join the choir. I found the choir director after the concert - I will be at choir practice next Sunday Morning. Saw Dallin's Mom and Dad - Barry and Connie - Said to tell you hi. Will send you Dallin's email when I find which slip of paper I wrote it on.

Got me a copy (Need to get a subscription - will do so SOON) of the Ensign Conference talks - Read "Fathers and Sons - A Remarkable Relationship" by Elder M. Russell Ballard. More on that later.

Before I send this - YOU'RE AWESOME!

and - do you need something to keep you warm there? No, I can't send Briana. But seriously,- Do You?

Love Dad

Subject: Handed out another Book of Mormon

Parker,

My latest experience with Dominos Pizza. When you order on the internet there is a place to give feedback. I wrote a short poem and....

The New Pizza can't be beatza
The New Cheese hit its aim to please
The New Sauce is the new boss
The New Crust leaves others in the dust

To quote my son, Elder Parker Martin Smith, age 20, currently serving as a missionary in the Ukraine for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints:

I wish you all happiness and health and success in the coming year. May your will be aligned with God's so that everything that takes place will be for your benefit and your growth.

I usually only do something like that, but this time I felt the Spirit telling me to get a Book of Mormon ready. So I grabbed one and put my testimony in it. When Brian got to the door I talked with him a bit and shared my testimony. I told him about the time when I had moved out of my mother's home at age 15 and moved back in at age 27. I had not been active in church for 12 years. I had just gone through my first divorce with Debbie. I was heartbroken and as I lay on the couch I prayed for the first time in 12 years. I wanted to be happy. I felt the answer come through me, not as a still small voice but booming through me as thundering velvet... "Go back to church!" I did not want to go back to church so I kept praying for a different answer and again, this time more thundering than before... yet still as soft as velvet... "Go back to church!" I knew where the answer came from so I started attending church and church dances where I met your mother - yes - going back to church was the answer I needed to be happy. I gave Brian The Book of Mormon and he said he would check it out. He said he was going to be taking Christian Studies this next semester in college. I shared with him a scripture - can't remember now if it was Helaman 5:12 or Moroni's promise. Now we let the Spirit take over.

Isn't it beautiful... ...I get the feeling I should prepare a Book of Mormon and the one I prepare it for is already moving in the direction of studying Christianity.

I love you.

It was great (That's an understatement) (Hold on - I hear Snofur at the door - BRB) to talk with you on Christmas... ...To hear your voice was such a joy. I love you.

Happy New Year!!!

I got some pictures from your mission president's blog of the Petrosky District building a spaghetti tower. How well did it do against the other districts. Fill us in on the details so I can add the story with the pictures.

Love,
Dad

Subject: As did I...

I love the feeling of putting that book in the hands of someone who has never held it before in their life.

I love the sound of voices of those who are near and dear to me, including you. It's especially pleasant to have such conversations in English. Thanks for speaking English.

I love the sight of our district working together to build a tower with noodles and candy. In the end, we came to the conclusion that this was awfully similar to the tower of Babel, or the tower Ramiumtum, and so we let it fall (actually it fell on it's own, but we got a good laugh). SO yeah, in comparison to the other districts...well...not so hot.

I love my dad!

Subject: Handed out another Book of Mormon

Parker,

I love ewe... ...and I love the Christmas Cards you sent me with fine looking Elders in front of a Christmas Tree and under the tree are many copies of the greatest gift a person could ask for... ...I just wish that it were easier to get people to see that. I will see that Roger and Monte get their copy and I will make one for Бабушка.

Kristi came to Sacrament and Sunday School with me today... ...She then came back and picked me up after Priesthood Meeting and surprised me with a Banana Cream Pie with a Heart made out of Banana slices. I ate it all at once... except for the part that ended up on my suit which will now be visiting the cleaners this week. Last year was the first year since I married your mother that I did not get one of these heavenly treats and I started to worry... ...and today I was in heaven when she surprised me with it. I don't know if you remember me or your dear mother telling you that the top tier of our wedding cake was Banana Cream Pie.

Anyway... here's the detail on me handing out another Book Of Mormon this past Thursday.

A woman, we'll call her Sheila being as that is her name, stopped by today with her son James - age 13, and her daughter Danielle - age 9. They were going door to door trying to sell some toys to earn some money. She is married to Tim. After telling her that I may buy some things from her tomorrow when I have some money on me and getting her phone number she started off down the street. I started to go back in the house and then the Spirit kicked in to give her a Book of Mormon. I started to turn around but then chickened out. As I went in the house and headed to my bedroom the Spirit wouldn't quit so I went back out the door and down street. I asked her if they attended church and she said yes... ...she wasn't quite sure of the name "Life Church" or something along those lines. I asked if she has heard of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and she said that she had. I shared with her about the Apostasy and that being the need for the Restoration. I shared with her about Joseph Smith and his wanting to know which church to join, about him reading

THE GENERAL EPISTLE OF
JAMES
CHAPTER 1

5 aIf any of you lack bwisdom, let him ask of God, that cgiveth to all men liberally, and dupbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

I shared with her about God and Christ telling him not to join any of them. I shared about Moroni. I shared about Peter, James and John. I shared about John the Baptist. I shared that the Restoration was necessary because of the Apostasy. I shared that Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration. I shared that we have a Prophet, Thomas S. Monson, on the Earth today and that he receives revelation from God to guide the church and the inhabitants of the Earth. I shared that each of us can receive personal revelation to guide us and our families through prayer. I shared that we have 12 apostles on the Earth today just as it was when Christ walked and taught before he was crucified. I shared more of my testimony with her that I won't go into details here. I shared with her

THE BOOK OF HELAMAN

CHAPTER 5

12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the arock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your bfoundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty cstorm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

She accepted the Book of Mormon and said she would read and pray about it.

I tracked down the Elders for her area and they said they knew who I was talking about. (She had told me they stop by from time to time.) I gave them her phone number. I called her this evening and let her know that I had given the Elders her number and that they would probably call her tomorrow. She said that would be fine.

Now we let the Spirit take over.

Oh yeah... ...I also talked with her about the Scouting program as her son is 13. I shared with her about the Temple Christmas Lights, Easter Pageant and Visitors Center.

I love the Gospel!!!

And I love ewe.

Parker,

I love you and love where you are in life. I am proud to have you as my son. I am thankful to you for choosing me to be you father and I am thankful to God for sending you to me. I am honored that you have come to me for advice and I will do the best I can to give you good counsel. There will be times when I will come to you for advice and I know you will do the same for me.

As I read your email the first thing that came to my mind was the word
"discipline". Too many of us are under the impression that "discipline" means "to punish" and this is not true. So; what does it mean to "discipline"? Anyone? Anyone? Let us examine the word "discipline" . It comes from the same root as the word "disciple" - the Greek word "discipla" which means "to teach". Think about it, Christ did not punish his "disciples" but he did "discipline" them - he did teach them, and he certainly did not beat them.

Quote #1 - A Christian is God Almighty's gentle hand. - J.C. Hare

Ask the father "What method did Jesus, the greatest teacher of us all, use to teach?" One method He used was parables. And what are parables? No, not two Toros from Mountain View but nice try. The Bible dictionary states that a parable is a story wherein divine truths are presented by comparison with material things. In Luke 15 we have the parable of the prodigal son which teaches repentance by way of confessing with a contrite heart. This parable also shows that the father of the prodigal son did not beat him for doing wrong - he showed him compassion and love, welcoming him home with arms wide open, thankful that his son was no longer lost, just as our Heavenly Father does for us.

Quote #2 - Discipline, like the bridle in the hand of a good rider, should exercise its influence without appearing to do so; should be ever active, both as a support and as a restraint; yet seem to lie easily in the hand. It must always be ready to check or to pull up, as occasion may require; and only when the horse is a runaway, should the action of the curb be perceptible.

Brother Goss, now 1st counselor in our Bishopric, was supposed to pick me up at 5:30 pm to go home teaching tonight but called at 5:34, still in the tithing office and said he would be here in 15 minutes for our 6:00 pm appointment. 6:30 pm rolled around and he had still not showed so I called his home and talked with Sister Goss as he had not yet returned home. I explained to her about your email and I had planned on asking his advice while we were together that evening. She said she would have Brother Goss call when he got home.

He called and apologized for not being able to do the home teaching, explaining they were short handed doing the tithing due to Brother Johnson, the new 2nd Counselor having family commitments he needed to attend to. We will be getting together next week for the home teaching.

I read Brother Goss your email to me and my email to you up through Quote #2. He likes what I have so far, about the definition of discipline, about what method does Jesus use to teach etc. He said that if the man is open to modern day revelation to go with that as well citing the following examples:

President Thomas S. Monson's October 2009 Closing Talk of the Priesthood Session - "School Thy Feelings, O My Brother" - November 2009 Ensign - Page 62
Doctrine & Covenants 121:38-42
I pointed out another talk from this last Conference Priesthood Session and he agreed. This one is Elder M. Russell Ballard's talk - "Father's and Sons - A Remarkable Relationship" - November 2009 Ensign - Page 47 (It states Fathers and Sons but it would fit just as well as Fathers and Daughters - A Remarkable Relationship" and replacing such words in the talk as Priesthood with Young Women's etc

He also stated that by trying to point out scriptures wherein children are revered by God would probably be to no end as the father would probably come back with other scriptures to back him up. I, looking up the word "rod" in the Bible Dictionary it states that in the scriptures we find several meanings:
A shepherd's rod for beating away wolves
A staff, sometimes called a rod, is longer and used for walking, resting and guiding sheep
Moses' and Aaron's rods represented authority
A rod was also used for punishing a wayward child as we find in the following scriptures:
Proverbs 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
There are more examples of the use of rods that you can look up in the Bible Dictionary if you so wish.

Now looking at the statement from the Bible Dictionary that reads:
A rod was also used for punishing a wayward child
it makes me think of Quote #2. It also makes me think of the only time I would think of spanking a child would be if a young child, young enough that they could not comprehend the danger of running into the street, were bent on trying to do so at every opportunity. I would not use a rod or a belt, but an open hand with one quick, stinging swat to the thigh or buttocks while telling them no. It's much better to have hold of their hands when near a road, keeping them safe until such an age where they would understand the danger. Did I spank you when you were a little less than two years old, on your skateboard on a median just a couple feet from traffic doing 55mph+ on McKellips? No, I scooped you up in my arms and held you close, thanking God for keeping you safe until I was able to find you.

Well... Here's some scriptures where children are revered in the eyes of God in the event that you would like to share them with him:

Mark 9:36-37
Mark 10:13-16
Matthew 18:10-14

There are many more - look in Bible Topical Guide under child/children etc.

Ask the father what it was like when he was a child... what he wish would have been different the way he was raised... what he liked and didn't like in the ways of being disciplined. Ask him to pray and pray with him.

Ask President and Sister Fry for advice - discuss these things I have shared with you - with them -before proceeding, if you can.

More next week!

Now on to other various and sundry items:

Mother/Daughter convert baptisms last night - confirmed today.

I told you about handing out a Book of Mormon to Sheila when she and her son James and daughter Danielle came by selling toys. If you don't remember, scroll down to my previous email. Anyways, she's called a few times and I called her and come to find out that her husband, Tim, has been out of work for five months or so. I told her about the Church's employment program and so she put Tim on the line.

I told him about the Church's employment program as well. He filled me in on his area of expertise. He's a journeyman electrician. A journeyman is one who has the necessary skills of his trade to have completed his apprenticeship. They, many times, will be the leader over a team of others within their same field of craftsmanship. Which is what Tim has the experience of doing.

I invited him to Stake Employment Night which is held every Tuesday night at 7:00 pm at the new Lehi Stake Center that was rebuilt after the fire two years ago. He came and picked me up on a rainy Tuesday evening. (More on the rain below.) We went to the Stake Center and I introduced him to many of the Ward Leaders before heading to the West end of the building where he was able to fill out a skill sheet, and get a referral for a job.

On the way home I shared my testimony with him and he shared with me how he likes his church very much - he really likes his pastor and hearing him speak on Sundays. I explained to him how it works in the LDS Wards with different members of the congregation being called upon to prepare and give the talks in Sacrament Meeting each week. I let him know that I would like him and his family (He loves being a father.) to come to church with me sometime. I told him I would be following up with him to see how the referral went.

I called him last night (Sat) and talked with him a bit. So far the referral hasn't been a success. I invited him to go again on Tuesday - he said yes. I invited him to church for today and he said he would be attending his own. I said cool but said I would like him to still attend with me some Sunday and see what it is like. We'll see.

In case you haven't heard - we've had much rain - so much that a) I know on one of the days this past week we set a record of rainfall that day beating the prior record of 1962. State of Emergency declared for the state which will help with funds to get things fixed. The wood fence across the street blew partially down and into the street. My room mate Scot and I went over with rope, hammer and nails and spent an hour getting it put back up while the wind and rain were still going strong.

I love you...

Dad, I love your experiences, in case I haven't told you already. I am once again turning to you for advice on something... I'm not sure exactly what you have to say on this subject, but when this came up, I thought I should go to you just to see what you think.

So there's this family that we are working with. Great family. There are the two parents and then the six kids. They are way active in their church (Word of Life), and they absolutely love the Bible. Well recently (after putting together several occurences), we concluded that the father is... well... physically punishing the children I guess you could say, and looking at Proverbs 23, I feel that he feels that he has some scriptural support for his action. What do you have to say about the situation? Like I love the family and the dad is great too. I just want to help him understand that there are better ways to help teach the children (like making them right a full page paper about their actions).

I love you dad.

Subject: Hey You!

Yeah I mean you Parker,

I love you!!! That's right I love you so there.

Going with the Elders Last week was really special. The Spirit was ever present as Elder Porter and I visited with an investigator, Diana and shared our testimonies of the restored gospel. To see this young lady as she yearns to learn more about God's Plan of Happiness is beautiful. We shared stories of our lives, and the lives of our ancestors, where the Power of Prayer was needed and called upon, and because of faith, these prayers were answered. When Grandma Jennie ran out of food and... ...hold on... ...she can tell it better than I.

I have had many faith promoting instances in my life. Many times the elders of the priesthood have been sent to our home in time of need and sickness. Once we had a very sick baby. The doctor had done all he could. My husband and I knelt in prayer that evening. Then when a knock came at our door a bother, John Ray, stood there. He said he had taken off his shoes in preparation for bed when a still, small voice had told him to go at once to our house. He knew not why. We knew however, that he had come in answer to our prayer. With my husband’s assistance, he administered to the baby and blessed her. The child was so much better the next morning that the doctor would hardly believe it.

Another time I was left to care for and feed my family as well as my sister’s children. {Jennie cared for and helped to raise these children (Olivia LaVon, Alfred & Thelma Harris)} Their mother (Olivia Stratton Harris) had died in 1918 with the flu. It was during the depression and my husband had gone to California to obtain work. On a certain morning I had given the children the last food I had and had sent them off to school, not having anything to eat myself. I knelt in prayer and told the Heavenly Father that I had done all I could and that I needed his help to feed my family. About 10 o’clock the bishop drove into the yard and said he had started to go to his ranch but something impressed him to go to our home, as we needed help. He left me with supplies to tide us over until my husband could send us a check."

We shared of calling upon the Power of Prayer when it was needed at work... I remember one time in particular although I know there have been many. I was leading the team on the Boeing Sampling Project for Honeywell Aerospace. Boeing is the largest global aircraft manufacturer by revenue, orders and deliveries, and the third largest aerospace and defense contractor in the world based on defense-related revenue. If the Quality Assurance Sampling Process for Boeing was not modified to their specifications by a given deadline, they were going to stop purchasing from Honeywell. That deadline was approaching fast and the project was at a standstill as we were trying to find the source of program failure. We had done everything we could think of, working overtime - hours and weekends - trying to find the cause to no avail. I sat at my desk, and humbly bowed my head in prayer. I expressed my gratitude for my job, remembering that it was truly a gift from Heaven when I got it. I talked about how important this project was, that we had done all we could, and asked if He would please help me find what was causing the program failure. After ending in Jesus' name I picked up my keyboard and made some programming changes that corrected the problem. The project was continued on to a successful completion. I don't know what I did to the programs when I picked up that keyboard... ...but I do know that the Power of Prayer is Real and I am thankful to God for it.

Elder Porter asked Diana if she would say the prayer to close our visit with her. She declined and expressed her fear. I asked her if her child were in need of help or someone to talk to, would she want that child to come to her. Diana said of course she would. I told her that Our Heavenly Father is the same. She then felt as if she would be able to say the prayer. We taught her how to pray,

1) Open by addressing Our Heavenly Father
2) Give Thanks
3) Ask for help
A) For Others
B) For Ourselves
4) Close in Jesus' name

and she declined again because of her fear. Elder Porter asked her to practice praying through the week. We explained how she could pray out loud or silent, in a crowd or in a closet - anywhere. Elder Porter asked if she could maybe try again the next time we came to visit. She said she would.

I talked with Elder Porter last evening and he said she has since then, on a subsequent visit, been able to work through her fear and say a prayer. YAHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! That is so awesome... ...to know that someone who didn't know how to pray is now praying!!! I love it. And she went to church yesterday, enjoying Sacrament Meeting and Gospel Principles - leaving either before or during Relief Society. (A three-hour block for someone new may be a bit like eating a whole cake in one sitting.)

I will be going with the Elders again this week to visit with Diana. Elder Porter is going to call her today to set up a time and will call me and let me know when.

I called Robert and Andrew, brothers who joined the church last year, and left a message introducing myself as one of the Ward Missionaries that would like to come and visit with them. I left my phone number and asked them to call me so we could set a time for that visit. I ended by asking them to call me if they needed help with anything. I will check back with them as well.

How are you doing Parker... ...It seemed a bit strange that you ask for advice but then hold off on reading it. But then again it may have just been my perceptiom that the time frame you would be waiting between the email arriving and the physical letter arriving from DearElder.com could be up to 6 weeks. It also seemed that you may have been a bit saddened to leave Petrovski. Is that true... ...I mean, I can see how it could be... ...Elder Tilgner is your son right? And to leave him in the hands of another to raise? Will the new father be a good teacher? Have I taught him well enough so he knows the closer he flies to the Son the better his life will be? Will the investigators continue to investigate? Who will help the great father become even greater by learning there is a better way to teach his children?

Talk to me Parker... ...let me know what your feeling about your mission, about Deandra, about me, about coming home. Speaking of coming home- what are your plans? Having you live here would be my choice if I were me, which I am.

Don't be afraid to talk to me... about anything!!! I love you - Do YOU "feel" the love? I really mean that - Do you feel my love for you? There is nothing on Earth or in the Heavens that can measure this love... ...and nothing will ever change it... ...it is unconditional and eternal.

Love,
Dad

Hi Elder Smith AKA Zone Leader,

You and Elder Duffy ROCK.

I told you about Diana saying her first prayer and going to church. I went with them again (The Ward Mission Leade - Boyd Ferguson - told me that they told him "We gotta get Brother Smith to go with us more often." I guess they enjoy the faith promoting stories I share from my life - God's been good to me Parker! He's been right where I needed Him to be throughout my life... ...I haven't always been where He has needed me but He Has for me.) last week and we met Diana down at the church instead of going to her house. This time I got to hear her pray - and Parker, you know what I'm talking about when I say how wonderfully beautiful it is to see someone start praying for the first time in their life. It was a sweet and lovely prayer and you could hear and feel her sincerity. We had set a target date for baptism as February 27 but it had to be pushed out a little further to let her get some Section 89 issues under control. Remember to add her to your prayers.

The chat below took place on Facebook tonight - I'm gonna have to add some trained monkeys to my testimony so the intended listener will stay awake. Tonight is the first time we've chatted = his name is David and he is Filipino and lives there as well. His profile says he's 32 and I think he has a gospel ministry.

DID YOU get the package from Dyan yet == with the JS ring?

I think I'm Utarded...

Love,
Dad

10:05pmBrett

If you want to learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ and God's Plan Of Salvation before we chat again you can go to this web site and look around, chat, ask them questions http://mormon.org

10:07pmBrett

Also, you can read The Book of Mormon on the internet at this web site http://scriptures.lds.org/bm/contents

Another prophet of God in the Americas was Moroni. He is Mormon's son. We - and that includes you David - have a promise from Moroni - If you read this book you should pray about it... ...don't take my word for it that it's true... ...but ask God if it is true... ...and Moroni, this prophet of God, has promised that God will manifest the truth of it, you will know that it is true, by the power of the Holy Ghost. Read this book along with the Bible - they are testaments that Jesus is the Christ. I know you already know him as our Savior. Do you want to know learn more about Him? Do you want to grow closer to him? I promise that if you read both these books you WILL be closer to Jesus. Your life will be blessed.

That Jesus, is the Christ, Son of the Living God, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is His church, That Joseph Smith is the prophet of the restoration of Christ's church to the Earth, which was necessary for our salvation after the apostasy left the world with noone on it with the authority to act ib God's name. Joseph Smith gave his life for the Savior, for the Father and for each of us because he loves us. Just like our Brother Jesus Christ did for us. Like a lamb to the slaughter he went and died was killed - although he was innocent. His dear brother Hyrum was the first one to be struck by a bullet and die when the mobs shot through the door, and Joseph watched his brother fall to the floor. I testify to you that we have a prophet on the Earth today and he receives revelation from God that instructions for the benefit of all mankind. Each of us are entitled to personal revelation from God that are instructions for ourselves and our families through prayer. Pray David, and God will reveal the truth of these words. I look forward to more chats with you. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen

Parker,

Remember the chat I had with David from the Philippines - He sent me an email the following day with his address for me to send him a copy of The Book of Mormon. He is formally known as Pastor David Joy Elcarte. I pray that after he reads, ponders and prays, "formally known as Pastor David Joy Elcarte" will change to "formerly known as Pastor David Joy Elcarte" and "formally known as Pastor David Joy Elcarte" will change to "formally known as Bishop David Joy Elcarte".

The chat is below along with an article on balut from Wiki and Fear Factor. I don't recall that they were boiled - I remember something about them being buried for weeks.

Love,
Dad

Preparation

Balut are most often eaten with a pinch of salt, lemon juice, plus ground pepper and Vietnamese Coriander leaves (Southern Vietnamese style), though some balut-eaters prefer chili and vinegar to complement their egg. The eggs are savored for their balance of textures and flavors; the broth surrounding the embryo is sipped from the egg before the shell is peeled and the yolk and young chick inside can be eaten. All of the contents of the egg are consumed, although the whites may remain uneaten, due to its cartilage-like toughness depending on the age of the fertilized egg. In the Philippines, balut have recently entered haute cuisine by being served as appetizers in restaurants: cooked adobo style, fried in omelettes or even used as filling in baked pastries.

Balut-making is native to the Philippines. A similar preparation is known in China as maodan (Chinese: Ă«µ°; pinyin: m¨˘od¨¤n; literally "feathered egg"), and Chinese traders and migrants are said to have brought the idea of eating fertilized duck eggs back from the Philippines. However, the knowledge and craft of balut-making has been localized by the balut-makers (magbabalut). Today, balut production has not been mechanized in favor of the traditional production by hand. Although balut are produced throughout the Philippines, balut-makers in Pateros are renowned for their careful selection and incubation of the eggs.

Fertilized duck eggs are kept warm in the sun and stored in baskets to retain warmth. After nine days, the eggs are held to a light to reveal the embryo inside. Approximately eight days later the balut are ready to be cooked, sold, and eaten. Vendors sell cooked balut out of buckets of sand (used to retain warmth) accompanied by small packets of salt. Uncooked balut are rarely sold in Southeast Asia. In the United States, Asian markets occasionally carry uncooked balut eggs. The cooking process is identical to that of hard-boiled chicken eggs, and baluts are enjoyed while still warm.

Duck eggs that are not properly developed after nine to twelve days are sold as penoy, which look, smell and taste similar to a regular hard-boiled egg. In Filipino cuisine, these are occasionally beaten and fried, similar to scrambled eggs, and served with a vinegar dip.

The age of the egg before it can be cooked is a matter of local preference. In the Philippines, the ideal balut is 17 days old, at which point it is said to be balut sa puti ("wrapped in white"). The chick inside is not old enough to show its beak, feathers or claws and the bones are undeveloped. The Vietnamese prefer their balut matured from 19 days up to 21 days, when the chick is old enough to be recognizable as a baby duck and has bones that will be firm but tender when cooked. In Cambodia, it is eaten while it is still warm in its shell. It is served with nothing more than a little garnish, which is usually a mixture of lime juice and ground pepper.

In Western popular media Balut has been the "shocking" topic of some television shows because of its taboo nature in some Western cultures. In the 2004 episode of Taboo (TV series) "Extreme Cuisine", balut is the opening segment. In two episodes of Survivor: Palau and two episodes of Survivor: China, separate challenges featured attempts to eat this delicacy. Similarly, Fear Factor frequently used balut as a means of disgusting contestants. Contestants of The Amazing Race Asia 2 had to eat 8 baluts as a team before receiving their next clue. The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs Team Mir featured balut eaten by several contestants after its introduction by a Filipino-American fighter Phillipe Nover. The Travel Channel show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern also featured balut, where the host pronounced 18-day-old balut one of the strangest foods he'd ever eaten in his life, but far better tasting than he had expected. Zane Lamprey, on his show Three Sheets attempts to eat balut but in the end cannot bring himself to do so. The members of the rock band Switchfoot ate balut on stage at their concert in the Philippines. Episode 28 of the Switchfoot Podcast shows video footage of this occurrence

Balut

Believe it or not, in certain parts of the world, it's a custom to eat soft-boiled eggs containing partially developed duck embryos. Filipinos call them "balut." Here at Fear Factor we simply call them gross.

We knew that balut - also known as the "treat with feet" and the "eggs with legs" - would make for a great Fear Factor stunt. But the trick was in finding out where to get a hold of some here in Los Angeles.

With the help of some duck farmers, we tracked down a balut supplier in a part of town known as Little Vietnam. It's a relatively small business that prepares thousands of duck eggs daily for sale to medical research labs and to Asian Americans hungry for a taste from home.

Some of these balut eggs are sold at weekend street fairs in L.A., where Vietnamese transplants can be found chowing them down with the help of some salt, pepper, and a couple of beers. Of course, we had no intention of serving our balut eggs with any salt, pepper or beer. We wouldn't want anything to spoil the taste now, would we?

The balut supplier showed us how he prepares the eggs for 18 days and then sends them on to food stores in the area. When we finished the tour, we hopped in the car and made a beeline to some of those stores. After all, we figured any place that carried balut probably had plenty of other gross food items in stock.

For the uninitiated, a trip to one of these stores can be a strange experience. The meat counter is packed with a dizzying array of animal guts. Even the candy aisle is filled with weird stuff like Banh Men, which are chalky, larvae-shaped coconut cookies that taste, well, horrible. Let's just say we left Little Vietnam with a bunch of balut eggs and a couple of ideas for some future stunts.

We brought the balut eggs to our Fear Factor kitchen and started boiling some test eggs at various cooking times. Fortunately, we were able to find a couple of volunteers in the office who were willing to give them a try. Let me tell you, they were not happy campers by the time they were through.

Nothing quite braces you for the first time you crack open a balut egg. As you dig into the yolky mess, you discover a miniature duck inside, complete with feathers and a beak! Adding to the horror is a terrible smell that works its way into your nostrils and just won't let go.

For the taste testers in our office, the worst part of the whole balut-eating experience was the crunching sensation they felt as they chomped through the embryo. Not surprisingly, it's the very same complaint we heard from our contestants. Oh, and one contestant complained of feeling a little eyeball slide down his throat.

"If they came and offered me the $50,000 right now to just eat one more, there is no way I would do it again," said one contestant after downing two of these suckers. "There is no way."

Parker,

I love you... ...Sorry about the short birthday email last week. First the good news and then my explanation. I have received the pathology report, and the good news is that the skin cancer surgery was a success. Last week I was still recouperating from that surgery so I wasn't feeling my normal self (well, as normal as the inner child will let an adult be.) I had even thought that I had emailed you about the surgery and not until Kristi called to ask how the surgery went did I realize that I had not, as well as had not called Kristi to give her the results of the pathology report. I was in a bit of pain and didn't feel up to going to church last week either. Although I was still recouperating, when the full-time missionaries called me Monday to go with them for a couple hours to meet with Diana (I've told you about her - the one that just recently learned how to pray.) and to meet with Hester, (A wonderful lady who I have now met for the first time.) I was more than happy to go with them. When they brought me home I had them give me a blessing of healing and I'm doing much better now. I'm sure at least one of the surgical team has been praying for me as well... ...at the hospital I had my usual Preach My Gospel, copies of The Book of Mormon and El Libro de Mormon, pass along cards for the upcoming Easter Pageant among various and other sundry LDS related items with me and was asked if I was LDS and I in turn asked him if he was and he replied yes - he would be Scott Gordon. That, along with other prayers, the blessing, faith and last and of most importance - God's graciousness, are some of the many pieces of the wonderful membership in the great organization known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I should have let you know that the surgery was coming up but didn't want to worry you... ...I wanted you to stay focused on bringing others to Christ and continuing to magnify your calling as Zone Leader, which I must say that yours and Elder Duffy's endeaver in this leadership position is exemplary.

It's late... ...I hope your near a computer and get this as quick as I send it... ...and know that I love you, I'm proud of you, you said forgive you for not being a better writer - nothing to forgive son - your emails are beautiful, poetic and inspiring - we can feel the love you have for those of us here, for the people you are reaching out to in the Ukraine, for your fellow missionaries and leaders, and most of all, your love for God and for our Savior, Jesus Christ. If you are near it - just a quick reply that you got the email will ease my mind.

Happy Birthday again son... ...every time when your's and Kristi's birthday comes near, I think that it must be my birthday - because you and her are two of the greatest gifts that I, or anyone, could ever hope to receive. I love you now - and forever!!!

Oh yeah... ...I meant to tell you Happy Pi-Day - so Happy Belated Pi-Day. I'm still having a problem with that Pi R Squared thing - I mean are not pi round... ...Cobbler R Squared... ...I guess Pi could be R Squared and Cobbler could be R Round or R Triangled or R any shape one would exercize their agency to make it. I guess the only time it must be Pi R*R is in mathematical equations such as finding the area of a circle as in:

A = pi*R*R

Well, circles r round and pi r squared - must be either the new math or the new Betty Crocker recipies

Anyways Happy Belated 3.14 Day

Date: March 28, 2010

Hey Parker,

Sorry I didn't email you last week. I had my computer apart because I'm re-doing my bedroom. No more holes in the walls... ...no more green walls. Tore down the wall where the closet was so now the room is BIGGER. Spread joint compound over the walls so it looks like the OLD houses did with cement walls and marks in the cement left from the trowel. Painting it a cream color... ...not finished yet... ...two walls nearly finished... ...two walls to go.

Been going out with Elder Porter and Elder Harris quite regularly but now Elder Harris has been transferred. He's been out nearly as long as you... ...November 19... ...and went from trainer to Zone Leader as well. Now I go with Elder Porter and Elder Gilbert... ...both from Idaho. I like going with them... ...I get to see what you go through by going with them... ...it's a bit different being as you're in the Ukraine but still... ...you know what I mean.

Well... ...Kristi and I had Elder Porter and Elder Harris over for dinner last week before the latter was transferred... ...Pizza from Dominos... ...good fun. They discussed faith and used a visual aide of "Missionary Paper" that they put in Kristi's hand and lit it on fire and told her to have faith that it would not burn her. After getting Kristi to be calm enough to hold it in her hand they lit it and it burned closer, and closer to her hand... ...right before the flames reached her hand, the paper leaped off her hand in flames.... ...awesome. It turns out the "Missionary Paper" is actually a tea bag and not just any tea bag - Bigelow brand tea bag is the only kind that will work I'm told.

Remember Diana who learned how to pray for the first time... ...well... ...she started dating a muslim who wanted nothing to do with the LDS faith... ...any time she tried to bring it up he said No... ...your trying to turn me into a Mormon. And then she said that she was looking on the internet and the Mormons are trying to overthrow the government... ...so she doesn't want any more lessons. I think it's the guy she's dating but what can ya do... ...just pray that the discussions so far will come into play later and she'll change her mind.

Yesterday (Friday) we (Elder Porter, Gilbert and I) met a guy as we were leaving a discussion that didn't happen. His name is Neil and he was moving a bed from his truck, not the truck bed... ...a bedroom bed from his truckbed to his apartment so we offerred assistance and he accepted. When we were done we talked with him about different things LDS related. I brought up the Easter Pageant and the Elder's gave him a (Jump forward to Sunday Night) ... ...to finish that last sentence pageant pass along card.

okay - still friday night - I'm home with Neil 's email address - gonna email him - instead of retyping what I was gonna send him - I'll just copy it to here

Neil,

The dances are at different locations and not necessarily each week.

If you want to go and would feel more comfortable if I went too, let me know. I don't have a vehicle that is in working order (3/4 Ton 4x4 454 GMC Suburban - Head Gasket, Jeep CJ5 - Rod Cap) or a driver's license but I could possibly get Sandi to go dancing with me and we could meet you there, or I could ride with you. This counts for the Easter Pageant as well, which runs through April 3. If you would like to attend church with me on Sunday, it starts at 1:30 pm.

High Councilman Brother Gardner speaks and testifies of the Savior... ...I'm continue to cry as the Spirit is so strong... ...I go to the investigators class and continue crying... ...and why? Yup... ...the Spirit is so strong... ...and off to Priesthood I go and stop crying long enough to get another copy of the Book of Mormon as I just passed out my last one to Kurt from Dominos on Friday night, shared that experience plus the experience with the Elders and Neil plus the experience with Pastor David Joy Elcarte from the Philippines from the facebook chat.

Came home to rest.... .but what do my wondering ears then hear... ...the phone ringing... ...Brother Smith This is Elder Porter... ...would you like to come withj Elder Gilbert and I to the Temple Visitors Center at 7:00 to meet with Kelly, Kelly and Neil. I'd Love To... ...I'kll be ready @ 7:00.

We get to Temple... ...Watch the hour long movie Joseph Smith: Prophet Of The Restoration - I'm crying all the way through - why? Yup - escpecially cause we're on Temple Grounds - in The Visitors Center and the Movie - wow... ...I knew I HAD TO Bear my testimony AS SOON AS the movie ended... ...I felt if I had to wait another minute I would explode... ...so as it came to an end... ...and the lights slowly came on and Sister Brox came in to start talking... ...I said "Please... ...I need to bear my testimony now..." She said sure... ...I stood up and through my tears I looked at each one in the room and said Neil... ...Kelly... ...Kelly... ...Elder Porter... Elder Gilbert... ...Sister Brox... ...and now you my son Parker... ...I want, I need you to know, that I know that Jesus is the Christ, That He lives...

Still trying to get one in the hands of Pastor David Joy Elcarte in the Philippines - I've sent one by filling out the forms at Mormon.org, and another a couple-few days ago by calling and talking to a Sister RM at the RC... and today I told him to look for Missionaries as they would be able to give him a copy. Elder Porter has a friend or relative - maybe a cousin - on a mission in the Philippines - I will find out if he is near Azumis City.

Elder Gilbert has a friend on a mission in Kiev - Elder Christian F. Schmutz - been out since January

Dallin comes home in June

Kristi says you get home the day before Thanksgiving (Is it okay to say YIPPEE!!!?)

I say you are awesome - Your son is a District Leader already - you trained him well!!!

More Missionary Experiences Later... ...I already have them... ...just not typed up.

And when it was learned, that is to say, when Kristi, the sister of Parker, also known to the people as Elder Smith, that is to say that Parker is also known to the people as Elder Smith, for he is a full-time missionary serving in the Ukraine Donetsk Mission when Kristi informed the multitudes of the day of his return, which is the day before Thanksgiving, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Ten, there was much excitement, yea, even rejoicing among all the people throughout the land for the space of many days.

And when I, Brett M. Smith, being the father of Kristi, and also of Parker, had heard these things, I too began to rejoice exceedingly.

And verily, verily I say unto you that I, although not a visionary man, yet having been blessed with wisdom from our Father in Heaven, yea, even enough wisdom to know that the rejoicing of which I have written in this record shall continue, yea, even until the day before Thanksgiving, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Ten, which is the day that has been foretold of Parker's, that is to say Elder Smith's, return.

And after I, Brett M. Smith, pondered upon this subject, for it is wisdom in me to ponder such things, that it was made known unto me by the Power and Gift of the Holy Ghost, for it is by this Power that we may know the truthfulness of all things, as promised by the Prophet Moroni, that this rejoicing, of which I have written in this record, shall continue beyond the day of his return, which is the day before Thanksgiving, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Ten.

And verily, verily I say unto you, that this day before Thanksgiving, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Ten, shall also be a day of Thanksgiving, and also the days following Thanksgiving, for we shall rejoice and give thanks to our Father in Heaven for Parker's, that is to say Elder Smith's, return, for he has been gone for the space of many days, yea, even twenty days longer than two-years on the day before Thanksgiving, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Ten, for he left on the fourth day of the month of November, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Eight, and the day before Thanksgiving, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Ten is the twenty-fourth day of the month of November, making the length of his absence, from beginning to end, a total of seven-hundred and fifty days, which is longer than the length of his full time mission by one day, for he traveled to the city of his Aunt Jennifer, which is also the city of the Missionary Training Center to which he was assigned, that is to say he traveled to the city of Provo, in the state of Utah, in the United States of America, which is a part of the North American continent in the Western Hemisphere on the fourth day of the month of November, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Eight.

And this is the end of this record, as written by I, Brett M. Smith, on this, the seventh day of the month of April, in the Year of Our Lord, Two-Thousand and Ten, which is one day beyond the One-Hundred and Eightieth anniversary of the organizing of Christ's church restored to the earth, which was done through the Prophet, Joseph Smith Junior, on the sixth day of the month of April, in the Year of Our Lord, One-Thousand Eight-Hundred and Thirty.

Let's see... ...where are we... ...you just finished watching General Conference this weekend... ...Last week I watched 4 sessions on TV and your Uncle Roger came by and we went to the Priesthood Session together... ...what a joy this sweet sentence gives... "I KNOW that my Redeemer lives!!!"

Today I fasted that we may have the Spirit strong with us, that we may preach the Gospel with the Power and Authority of God, that our tongues may be loosed, that we may deliver the message of hope to those who need it, that the Missionary Experiences will come, that we may magnify our callings as Missionaries.

Last Monday we (Elder Porter, Elder Gilbert and I) drove by Bishop Little's house and I dropped off my tithing and fast offering... ...we were in the neighborhood... ...He was not feeling well... ...The Elder's were in the car... ...I offered to grab them so they could exercise the healing powers of the Priesthood but Sister Little said he would survive... ...just needed some rest... ...I apologized for stopping by on a Monday night and promised we would pray for him... ...we did... ...he survived... ...I can't hardly wait till you meet them... they are an awesome couple... ...she is the organist sometimes.

It's Sunday night here... ...although it's the 11th and not the 13th, I went outside looking for the moon that I saw on that beautiful night that your sweet mother returned home... ...time for me to go change the songlist being played at Ever On... ...for some reason I am being prompted to put, instead of the Captured Angel songs by Dan Fogelberg, A Poor Wayfaring Man Of Grief.
More later...

I love you and you are my hero as well... ...and Kristi is my heroine.

Elder Smith,

(Sometimes I just like addressing you that way, sometimes as Parker, sometimes as my son, sometimes as Lizard Lips or Twirp... ...maybe an occasional Gecko Breath... ...and I have been known to call you Pookie and Parkner... ...but in this email I want to address you as Elder Smith... Why? Because I love you.)

I know I'm preaching to the choir when I tell you that as Missionaries or otherwise, no matter how much we preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ - "WE" do not convert anyone... ...the Holy Ghost does... ...but it's nice to be there when the conversion takes place. The following is from the Bible Dictionary under the heading "Holy Ghost".

When a person speaks by the power of the Holy Ghost that same power carries a conviction of the truth into the heart of the hearer (2 Ne. 33: 1).

Kristi picked out the Leather-bound edition of Jesus, The Christ so... you just better tell her how AWESOME it is that she did... ...every thing that she suggested as we looked at Deseret Book I made sure that we got - she wanted a better Pen or at least one that had Parker instead of just the "P" but they didn't have that - she also wanted to send Girl Scout Cookies but the Council for this area and the one in Thatcher had finished the cookie drive for the year---but we'll find a suitable alternative... she wanted to send another Journal (matching of course) but Spencer at Deseret Book on Mesa Drive said that being as you were sent one at Christmas that you probably would not need one - Spencer served in Ukraine - said Roxolana used to smuggle packages across the borger to missionaries - I asked the guy I talked to a Roxolane if they still do that - he said no - that I will be able to track the package all the way along till it get's to you... ...just like in the States with
FedEx or UPS.

To Parker Smith’s Dad,

I called and talked to Elder Smith. He sounded really good. I told him that you sent your love. He said, “Yes, I have a great father.” He said that just having zone conference and general conference really has made it so that all was well. “It helps one get through it all”, he said. I told him to call if he needed anything at anytime.

We really enjoy Elder Smith. He is a great missionary and full of enthusiasm for doing the Lord’s work. He is a son you can be really proud of. He always brings joy to the office when he comes in to get materials etc.

I hope that you too are receiving comfort from the Lord on this day. It must be hard. I do know though that those from the other side are near and doing all they can to help us in our daily lives and to further the Lord’s work.

Take care.

Subject: My comments to Kristi on not receiving an exact answer when praying

Sometimes we look at the world and our choices in it from a flat-earth perspective... ...we feel that if we make the wrong choice we will fall off the end of the earth. Know this... if we live righteously, having faith in Christ, faith in the Power of prayer, doing our part for "Faith without works is dead"... we will make the right choices. Remember who you are... A beautiful, intelligent daughter of God... ...you have His DNA within you... ...your family tree, whether you follow it through your maternal or paternal lineage can be traced through Adam and Eve to Our Father in Heaven who sees the big picture... ...never the flat-earth perspective. Remember, as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that you have as a constant companion that third member of the Godhead known as the Holy Ghost... ...and we know through the Prophet Moroni that the Holy Ghost is the testifier of truth... ...and by the Power of the Holy Ghost we can know the truth of ALL things... ...we will not be led off the end of the earth. Sometimes when we come to a fork in the road, and we pray to know which road to take but do not "seem" to receive a clear answer - that may in itself be the answer. God can see where each path will lead us... ...the end from the beginning and it may just be that either path is good in the eyes of God and if we could see as He sees we might see that either path will ultimately lead us to the same destination. If that is the scenario then you need not worry... ...God has your back either way. You have done right by listing the pros/cons of each path. I love you daughter - Always remember to travel a path of heart as opposed to a path of convenience.

Subject: Praying with "real intent"

3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.

4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

I only learned this week what it means to pray with "real intent". I had always thought that it meant to be sincere. In Moroni 10:4 it already states to "ask with a sincere heart". Following that it states "with real intent". In Preach My Gospel, page 73, it gives the definition of "real intent" as being committed to act upon the answer that we receive.

Dad

"Elders Steele, Shipp, Duffy and Smith talked about ACCOUNTABILITY. Some of their comments were: Be accountable to 1) self (moral agency - moral discipline - sometimes we do what is easy - not necessarily what is right."

Muriel Strode said:

"Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."

To which I say:

"If Muriel strode where there was no path... ...what did she leave a trail of?

Some paths are good, others not so good... now the question is; Are we really following a path or are we forging our own as we view the paths left by others, borrowing that which is good, for we see that it may help to bridge future uncertainties?"

To paraphrase one whose path I have borrowed from many times...

PS... Let me share a missionary experience. Tuesday morning as I readied to go give service at the Bishop's Storehouse I thought that I need not bring my carrying case with copies of The Book of Mormon, El Libro de Mormon and other various and sundry LDS related items because, after all, would not all those who are there be LDS? But the Spirit reminded me that I was raised as a Cub and Boy Scout and that I should always "Be Prepared". So I took it with me. The first person I'm assigned to serve with is NOT a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints but Catholic. Her nickname is Country... ...My nickname is Country Boy Extraordinaire because although I wear what some would say is a Cowboy Hat, Boots, Wranglers... ...I am not a Cowboy... ...I don't brand cattle etc... ...but I grew up in the farming community of Lehi, Arizona with ducks, chickens, pigs, rabbits, horses, dogs, a "Thundering Herd" of cats as my mother would call them, pigeons and although we did not own a cow... ...I assure you that I do know how to milk one and how to strain it in the event the bovine animal happens to put her hoof in the pail. Now, I start sharing the gospel with Country and she says to me:

"Now you Mormon's think that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three separate Beings... ...but everyone else says they are one. Explain that!!!"

As guided by the Spirit I said:

"Okay. Who did Jesus pray to in Gethsemane? Himself?"

Country said:

"No... ...okay you got me on that one... ...but what about the Holy Spirit?"

Once again, as guided by the Spirit I said:

"When Jesus was baptised by John, The Baptist, did not the Holy Spirit descend upon Jesus like a dove? Was there not a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased?"

She smiled and said:

"Yes."

I told her I would be right back and I went and grabbed a copy of The Book of Mormon, put my testimony in it. I shared with her Moroni's promise, Helaman 5:12, 1st Nephi 3:7, John 10:16.

When Country left that day she came to me and gave me a hug, and she left with a copy of The Book of Mormon.

I am a Ward Missionary... ...and I am thankful to God for the Holy Ghost... ...for without that member of the Godhead to guide me and my words... ...I am lost with nothing to say... ...with Him... ...I can speak with the Authority of God for "WE" do not convert anyone... ...the Holy Ghost does... ...but it's nice to be there when the conversion takes place. The following is from the Bible Dictionary under the heading "Holy Ghost".

"When a person speaks by the power of the Holy Ghost that same power carries a conviction of the truth into the heart of the hearer (2 Ne. 33: 1)."

The following day, I returned to the Bishop's Storehouse and was assigned to work in the cannery. I met a young man from the Navajo nation by the name of Lorrison... ...we shared poetry with each other along with stories of our beliefs... ...I talked with him about The Book of Mormon and he agreed to read it and pray.

Pray for Missionary Experiences and they will come... ...but when you pray for them, be committed to act upon the answers you receive for that is the definition of praying with "Real Intent" as described on page 73 of "Preach My Gospel."

What a joy this sweet sentence gives... ...I KNOW that my Redeemer lives!!!

I say these things in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen

I LOVE YOU and I LOVE BEING A MISSIONARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Temple Prep Classes were originally to start on April 11 but they changed that to May 2 probably because the teachers, Bruce and Melany Bair, were going to be out of town on April 18 and Stake Conference was this weekend April 24/25.

Soooo... Earlier this evening, wait, first, I've known Bruce since I was a teenager... ...Not real well because he is Mont's age, which is four years older than I. Okay, so, I'm reading Jesus, The Christ (I decided to keep this one for myself and get you one when you get home.) and I stop when Bruce and Melany come by and Bruce comes to the door and hands me a 8.5x11 sheet of paper, folded in thirds. Hand written on the outside it reads " Brother Smith". He invites me to Temple Prep the next week and asks me to read the information regarding the class and to prepare as outlined on the paper and the 3x5 card inside. I thank him and come inside and open the paper and it reads:

We would like to extend an invitation to attend the Temple Preparation Class.

Brother Bair and I are excited to teach this class to help you in your preparation to go to the Temple. We would like to ask you to bring with you each Sunday your scriptures and the booklet which you will receive in the first class. Please prayerfully read the materials for each class and be prepared to join the discussion.

We will meet each Sunday, beginning next week. The class will be held during Sunday School time in a room yet to be determined. The following dates are the dates for the class.

May 2nd
May 9th
May 16th
May 23rd
May 30th
June 6th
June 13th

We hope you will be able to attend the class each week and be prepared to enter the Temple in a few weeks time.

Bruce and Melany Bair

I sent this to President Klepinger after he gave me a ride home from Stake Conference.

President Klepinger,

Thanks again for the ride home after the Sunday morning session of Stake Conference and for the time we shared getting to know each other a little better.

I had been anxiously looking forward to Stake Conference and I am grateful that I have such a wonderful Stake Presidency to learn from. It's such a blessing to know that I can count on my Priesthood Leaders to guide me in the ways of righteousness as directed by the Spirit.

The conference was beautiful, the Spirit was strong, the teachings were clear. I came away from it a better man. My testimony increased, my wisdom added upon, my armor of God strengthened.

I pray that my comments in Priesthood Leadership meeting were in line with the Stake Presidency's curriculum of Team Teaching With Boyd K. Packer. What a joy it was to be invited, as a Ward Missionary, to attend and take part in that meeting.

Meet my children...

Kristina Lauren Smith is 19 and attending Eastern Arizona College on her way to becoming a nurse... ...She is dating a return missionary by the name of Shannon King.

Elder Parker Martin Smith is a Zone Leader serving in the Ukraine Donetsk Mission scheduled for return the day before Thanksgiving.

Here is a quote by him:

I love seeing the Spirit work with people.
A change takes place.
It's magical...but it's not magic.
Just the love of God being felt by those present.

Here is something I wrote this past December. I sent it to President Ahlstrom shortly after I wrote it and now I share it with you.

Twas The Day Before Christmas

Twas the day before Christmas and all across the world
The Kingdom of God was being unfurled.

Missionaries of every kind were spreading the word;
“Jesus is The Christ!” to those who’d not heard.

The Book of Mormon placed in each backpack with care,
With faith there’ll be someone to receive it out there.

The missionaries that morn knelt in prayer by their beds,
While visions of baptisms danced in their heads.

Gave the luster like diamonds to objects below.

Knowing Christ was born and will banish Satan’s strife
A Merry Christmas to all, Exaltation, Eternal Life.

A "Hillside Ward" "Ward Missionary"

I want to share with you the following Missionary Experience. I have tried to word it in a way that it will be understood by those who are not familiar with The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as well as those who are. Feel free to share it with whomever you like.

Sunday before Easter-I go to church-Brother Goss testifies of the Savior-I'm crying because the Spirit is so strong... High Councilman Brother Gardner speaks and testifies of the Savior-I continue to cry because the Spirit is so strong-I go to the investigators class because I am a Missionary who shares the Gospel of Jesus Christ with investigators and this is a special Sunday School class for them to learn more about God's Eternal Plan of Salvation where-in Christ's Atonement is an integral part-and I continue crying-and why? Yup-the Spirit is so strong-I then attended Priesthood Meeting because I am an ordained Priest in the Aaronic Priesthood and have the same Authority as John, The Baptist and have been commissioned of Jesus Christ to baptize in His name.

After, I came home to rest-but what do my wondering ears then hear-the phone ringing...

Brother Smith-This is Elder Porter-would you like to come with Elder Gilbert and I to the Temple Visitors Center at 7:00 to meet with Kelly, Kelly and Neil?

I'd Love To-I'll be ready @ 7:00.

We get to the Temple-Watch the movie Joseph Smith: The Prophet Of The Restoration-I'm crying all the way through-why? Yup-especially 'cause we're on Temple Grounds-in The Visitors Center and the Movie-WOW!

The Spirit of God like a fire was burning within me-I knew I HAD TO bear my testimony AS SOON AS the movie ended-I felt if I had to wait another minute without doing so, my heart would burst-so as it came to an end-and the lights slowly came on.. ...and Sister Brox came in to start talking-I said...

"Please-I need to bear my testimony now..."

She said "Sure!!!"

I stood up and through my tears I looked at each one in the room and said Neil-Kelly-Kelly-Elder Porter... Elder Gilbert-Sister Brox...

I want... I need you to know...

that I KNOW...

Jesus is The Christ, that He lives!

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is His church!

Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God and The Prophet of the restoration of Christ's church to the earth-which was necessary since the Apostasy left the world in darkness!

I KNOW there is a Prophet on the earth today! His name is Thomas S. Monson and he is the mouthpiece of the Lord.

I KNOW this movie we have just seen is true!

It's not because I was raised in the Church that I know these things to be true-it's because I went away from it. At age fifteen I moved out of my mother's home because of some problems I was having with my first step-father. I've long since forgiven him. After I moved out I fell away from the Church. When I was in my darkest hour after my first divorce, I prayed for the first time in twelve years, pleading with God to show me the way to happiness. I heard the answer, not with my ears, but with my heart...

"Go back to church!"

This is not the answer I wanted so I kept praying, asking for some other way to be happy. Again, and this time, more than before, I heard the answer as it rocked every fiber of my being, yet still as soft as velvet...

"GO BACK TO CHURCH!!!"

The answer was not go to church or go to any church-it was go "back" to church. I started attending LDS church dances where I met who would become the mother of my children. I could not have written or invented Kristi or Parker any better than the way they are-I'm thankful they chose me to be their father.

I've been blessed in every aspect of my life since I "went back to church".

I say these things in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen!

I sat down and Kelly the investigator looked at me and I at her. With both of us in tears she said...

"It's really true, isn't it?"

I said...

"Yes. It's really true-It's not just a story-it's really true."

Her baptism is scheduled for May 8th.

Pray for Missionary Experiences and they will come.

Love,
Brett

"Elders Steele, Shipp, Duffy and Smith talked about ACCOUNTABILITY. Some of their comments were: Be accountable to 1) self (moral agency - moral discipline - sometimes we do what is easy - not necessarily what is right."

Muriel Strode said:

"Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."

To which I say:

"If Muriel strode where there was no path-what did she leave a trail of?

Some paths are good, others not so good... now the question is; Are we really following a path or are we forging our own as we view the paths left by others, borrowing that which is good, for we see that it may help to bridge future uncertainties?"

To paraphrase one whose path I have borrowed from many times...

"Travel a path of heart...
...as opposed to a path of convenience."

THE
BOOK OF MORMON
THE BOOK OF MORONI
CHAPTER 10
Moroni's Promise

I shared with her:

THE BOOK OF HELAMAN
CHAPTER 5

12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

I shared with her:

THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI
HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY
CHAPTER 3

7 ...the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

I shared with her:

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
ST JOHN
CHAPTER 10

16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

The other sheep that Jesus was referring to were the people on what is now known as the American Continent.

When Country left that day she came to me and gave me a hug, and she left with a copy of The Book of Mormon.

I am a Ward Missionary-and I am thankful to God for the Holy Ghost-for without that member of the Godhead to guide me and my words-I am lost with nothing to say-with Him-I can speak with the Authority of God for "WE" do not convert anyone-the Holy Ghost does-but it's nice to be there when the conversion takes place. In Priesthood Leadership Meeting on Saturday I had this thought-if the Missionary's Guidebook is "Preach My Gospel"&if every member is a missionary-well, put "Preach My Gospel" in the h&s of each family&have them teach out of it for Family Home Evenings.Home Teaching/Visiting Teaching could also go that route.

What a joy this sweet sentence gives...

"Hillside Ward" ~ "Ward Missionary"

PS...I decided to look at LDS.org on this-In October 2007 at the 177th General Conference Elder Erich W.Kopischke Of the Seventy referred to "Preach My Gospel" as the "Unifying Tool between Members&Missionaries"

Missionaries&members must become one in our efforts to proclaim the gospel.

Not long ago, we invited two sister missionaries over for lunch. After we finished eating, we asked them to leave a spiritual thought with us.They were well prepared&introduced a scripture reading&marking exercise to us.They had brought a fresh copy of the Book of Mormon&a set of colored pencils. We accepted the invitation of the missionaries.Since then, our daily Book of Mormon family scripture reading has changed. In every chapter, we mark with different colors the passages related to Jesus Christ as we discover them.Every time, this little exercise reminds us of our missionaries. When the missionaries presented this, we immediately recognized it as a scripture study exercise suggested in Preach My Gospel. As a family, we are so thankful for this great&powerful missionary tool. For the past three years missionaries have been using Preach My Gospel all around the world. It has truly revolutionized missionary work. The great vision of President Hinckley is being fulfilled: Missionaries “master the concepts of the lessons.” They “teach the concepts in their own words under the guiding influence of the Holy Spirit” see “Missionary Service,” Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting, Jan.11, 2003, 19.As the missionaries become immersed in Preach My Gospel, they learn&apply important doctrines&principles which make them more capable in their important service.Despite this, they still need all of our help&support.Only together can we fulfill the great charge given to the ancient&modern Apostles: “Go ye into all the world,&preach the gospel to every creature” Mark 16:15.In order to be successful in these efforts, we must be one with the missionaries,&we must underst& one another.Do you always underst& the missionaries? I do not refer to language but rather to how they do missionary work.We see&observe them inviting people to listen to their message. They teach gospel principles&invite those who are interested to change their lives&be baptized&confirmed members of the Church. If we want to underst&&help our missionaries, we must have faith as missionaries have faith, we must think as missionaries think,&we must feel as missionaries feel. How can we achieve that? One important way, of course, is to be with the missionaries&see them do what they do.But another way for us is to get acquainted with Preach My Gospel&learn more about missionary work.Ever since President McKay said, “Every member a missionary” in Conference Report, Apr.1959, 122 , members have been striving to become more active in sharing the gospel. With Preach My Gospel, we have a marvelous guide to better help us act upon this invitation. Our own study of Preach My Gospel will not only help us to develop a greater underst&ing&appreciation for our missionaries, but it will help us in our own day-to-day life.Every member of our family owns a copy of Preach My Gospel.Studying this guide is a great support in developing a strong testimony. It helps us underst& fundamental gospel principles&the desire to serve.Allow me for a moment to highlight some of the headings of Preach My Gospel [2004], iii ,&you will underst&.

They read:How Do I Recognize&Underst& the Spirit? How Do I Study Effectively&Prepare to Teach? What Do I Study&Teach? What Is the Role of the Book of Mormon? How Do I Develop Christlike Attributes?Aren’t those the things that all of us want to learn? For everyone who wants to become a better member missionary&who wants to know how to support the missionaries, Preach My Gospel is full of powerful ideas&insights. We learn how we can help the missionaries find people to teach&how we as members can work h& in h& with the missionaries to help those who are investigating the Church. We learn to underst& why strong invitations to act are helpful to increase faith in Jesus Christ&how we can st& with our nonmember friends who are moving through this wonderful, life-changing process of conversion.Along with studying the scriptures, missionaries study Preach My Gospel every day. They learn principles&skills,&they apply them. They especially learn how to use the guidance of the Spirit in their work.If we want to learn as missionaries do, we too must carefully study Preach My Gospel&observe the missionaries in their daily work.In the introduction to Preach My Gospel, we read: “Preach My Gospel is for the full-time missionaries of the Church. However, the principles&doctrines taught herein are also applicable to ward missionaries&leaders as they seek to build the Lord’s kingdom.Frequent study of this manual will enable them to fulfill their responsibilities as member missionaries&will foster unity with the full-time missionaries” xi.Elder Richard G.Scott taught that all members should carefully study Preach My Gospel. He said, “Much good has been accomplished since Preach My Gospel was introduced, but the best is yet to come as we all become more proficient in the use of this extraordinary missionary tool” “The Power of Preach My Gospel,” Liahona&Ensign, May2005 Our time may seem limited to do this study, so therefore let me give a few suggestions that may help.Youth preparing for a mission should carefully study Preach My Gospel along with the scriptures.Invite the missionaries to your home.Ask them to teach you&your family a principle or doctrine from Preach My Gospel.Every once in a while, use Preach My Gospel for family home evening.Let your teenage children teach your family as missionaries would do.In our home, we have had some surprisingly great lessons given by our children. We have been astonished at how well they taught simple principles.Sometimes we have invited friends to those lessons.Gospel teachers could use the simple but effective principles of gospel teaching as outlined in Preach My Gospel as a support to the prescribed courses of study.Preach My Gospel has been translated&published in almost every language that our members speak. In countries where the Church is still young, Preach My Gospel may be used along with the scriptures as a resource&foundation for all gospel learning&teaching.Elder Scott encouraged local Church leaders “to use these materials in presidencies, priesthood executive committee meetings,&ward councils” Use Preach My Gospel as a resource for training, talks, spiritual thoughts, lessons, firesides,&personal study.I bear witness that this missionary guide is inspired of God.We must study it more carefully, that we may underst& our missionaries&their work better.Missionaries&members must speak one language. We must become one in our efforts to proclaim the gospel. It will better enable us to become tools in the h& of the Lord, for He said, “& even so will I gather mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, even as many as will believe in me,&hearken unto my voice” D&C 33:6 .As members of His Church, we are expected to be a part of this glorious gathering process.Of this truth I testify in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

~~ Marianne Williamson ~~

There's A Place In The World For A Gambler

There's a place in the world for a gambler
There's a burden that only he can bear
There's a place in the world for a gambler
And he sees, Oh, yes he sees
And he sees Oh, yes he sees

There's a song in the heart of a woman
That only the truest of loves can release
There's a song in the heart of a woman
Set it free, Oh, set it free
Set it free, Oh, set it free

There's a light in the depths of your darkness
There's a calm at the eye of every storm
There's a light in the depths of your darkness
Let it shine, Oh, let it shine
Let it shine, Oh, let it shine

Subject: Temple Prep Classes

When Dan Fogelberg passed away from prostate cancer I made a resolution to get tested every year and made an appointment with my doc. The DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) is never fun but it only lasts a few seconds. Dr. Poirier said my prostate felt normal. Next I went for lab work - the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test. Normal levels are below 4.0 and my level of PSA was 0.4 - Those are the results from 2008. 2009 I was good to go as well. 2010 came and I made my appointment again. The DRE for 2010 - normal. PSA was 0.19.
And if anyone is interested... ...here are my other numbers...

Have you thought of maybe being a Ward Missionary when you get home?

A blessed event has taken place in the life of Kelly Colbert. This beautiful daughter of God has followed the counsel of the Prophet Moroni and has received an answer. Saturday evening May 8, 2010 at 7:00 pm at the Lehi Stake Center the Spirit was sweet as Kelly followed the definition of praying with "real intent" by acting upon the answer she received. In Sacrament Meeting the following day we listened with our hearts to the beautiful sound of someone receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

What a joy this sweet sentence gives...

Baptism of Kelly Colbert
Lehi Stake Center
1430 North Grand
Mesa, Arizona 85201

The first article of faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints states:

"We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost."

These three beings make up the Godhead. They preside over this world and all other creations of our Father in Heaven. I want to talk with you tonight about that third member of the Godhead who is often referred to as The Holy Spirit, The Spirit of God, The Comforter, The Testifier Of Truth. He is a personage of spirit, without a body of flesh and bones. The Holy Ghost works in perfect unity with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, fulfilling several roles to help us live righteously and receive the blessings of the gospel.

He "witnesses of the Father and the Son" (2 Nephi 31:18) and reveals and teaches "the truth of all things" (Moroni 10:5). We can receive a sure testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ only by the power of the Holy Ghost. His communication to our spirit carries far more certainty than any communication we can receive through our natural senses.

I am a Ward Missionary... ...and I am thankful to God for the Holy Ghost... ...for without that member of the Godhead to guide me and my words... ...I am lost with nothing to say... ...with Him... ...I can speak with the Authority of God for neither you or I convert anyone... ...the Holy Ghost does... ...but it's nice to be there when the conversion takes place.

The following is from the Bible Dictionary under the heading "Holy Ghost".

"When a person speaks by the power of the Holy Ghost that same power carries a conviction of the truth into the heart of the hearer (2 Ne. 33: 1)."

Tomorrow Kelly Colbert will be confirmed a member of the only Church that affirms authority based on specific revelation and commission to use the Lord's Holy Name as a distinctive designation. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With that confirmation she will receive what President Wilford Woodruff called the greatest gift we can receive in mortality... ...the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The new convert who has accepted the gift of the Holy Ghost with the right spirit will experience not only a cleansing but a feeling that will give him a new heart and make of him a new person. Sometimes this is immediate, and sometimes it happens over a period of time. But always there is a change for the better.

Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles states this:

" The baptized person becomes a new creature. He is baptized with fire; sin and evil are burned out of his soul, and he is born again.”

Like a radio, however, we have to be in tune spiritually before we are able to receive spiritual guidance. Those who have faith in God and His Son Jesus Christ can receive personal revelation regarding spiritual matters. If we feel we are not receiving spiritual guidance in our lives, it is because we are not in tune spiritually, and like a radio out of tune, we will not receive personal revelation that teaches us truth.

When Paul the Apostle composed his epistle to the inhabitants of Galatia he wrote :

"...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance."

I testify to you that having that third member of the Godhead as your constant companion will be a wonderful blessing to you throughout your life. As we live worthy of that companionship we are able to count on the Holy Spirit to comfort us in times of despair, guide us away from danger and I add my promise to that of the Prophet Moroni that the Holy Spirit will testify to us of the truthfulness of all things. As you continue in your new life I would ask that you search the scriptures, attend church, accept callings, pray daily, walking the path of righteousness, for as we do these things we will grow closer to the Savior, our spiritual radio will be in tune to receive the signal of our Father in Heaven channeled through the Holy Ghost and our lives will be blessed with those fruits of the Spirit outlined by the Apostle Paul.

This is my testimony and my prayer that I leave with you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Have Faith
Scriptures

My comments to Kristi on not receiving an exact answer when praying

Remember, as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that you have as a constant companion that third member of the Godhead known as the Holy Ghost... ...and we know through the Prophet Moroni that the Holy Ghost is the testifier of truth... ...and by the Power of the Holy Ghost we can know the truth of ALL thing s... ...we will not be led off the end of the earth.

Subject: a Mother/Son Convert Baptism

There's a Mother/Son Convert Baptism Sunday, September 19, 2010 @ 6:00 pm @ the Lehi Stake Center - I will be saying one of the prayers.

Marietta Ultotvaldez and Sean Perez age 9.

I remember when we first showed her where the church was and invited her to come the next Sunday!!!

She also has a beautiful daughter named Shaylyn - we have to wait another 4 1/2 years... ...yeah... ...she's 3 1/2.

I wept tears of thanksgiving as I read this today.

The Wall Comes Down
The Church in Eastern Germany (Part 2: 1989–1990)

Ensign, Jun 1991, 32 Garold and Norma Davis

Breaching the wall ended the isolation endured for half a lifetime by members in eastern Germany.

At the end of World War II, in 1945, missionaries once again were sent to areas in the western “zones of occupation” in Germany—what would become the Federal Republic of Germany. But they were not permitted to enter the Russian zone of occupation, the eastern area of Germany that would become the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Members in the eastern branches of the Church would have to provide their own missionary force. So, for the next twenty years, single women and single and married men accepted the call to serve as full-time missionaries within the German Democratic Republic’s borders.

In the mid-1960s, even this internal missionary service was banned by the government. For the next twenty-five years there were no full-time missionaries in eastern Germany. One can easily imagine, then, the joy and excitement that swept through the thirty wards and branches in the German Democratic Republic when the government announced, in late October 1988, that foreign missionaries would once again be allowed to enter areas where they had not served for fifty years.

Elder Jorg von Allmen recalled his arrival in Dresden in March 1989:

“As my companion, Elder Ludwig, and I entered the chapel for the first time, the Relief Society broke into a song of welcome. We were enveloped in a feeling of warmth and love. The faces of the sisters reflected the fulfillment of many, many years of prayers.”

By the first of June 1989, the full-time missionary force had increased to twenty-two; missionaries were assigned to Dresden, Freiberg, Leipzig, Zwickau, Cottbus, Berlin, Erfurt, and Annaberg. There were two couples. One couple was assigned to the temple grounds in Freiberg (as guides), the other to the mission office. President Wolfgang Paul, who had been serving as president of the Germany Hamburg Mission, was called to preside over the new Germany Dresden Mission, both from his home in Hamburg and from the temporary office in the basement of the meetinghouse in Dresden. In mid-July, he moved his family into a hotel in Dresden, and later the mission was able to obtain a temporary mission home on the sixth floor of a large apartment building.

Because of the critical housing shortage in the German Democratic Republic, missionaries were housed either with families or in temporary quarters in ward and branch meetinghouses. In Church buildings, it was common that the missionary apartment would become a classroom on Sunday. In some cases, portable showers were installed in the ward kitchen, where the missionaries also cooked. The bathroom might be located two floors below the living quarters. Still, the missionaries were happy to be serving where missionary service had been forbidden for so long, and the members were overjoyed to have them.

On one occasion, we, as missionaries, were assigned to help deliver four young elders to their new areas in the GDR. As we approached the side street which led to the meeting place of the Neubrandenburg Branch, we saw a small crowd of nicely dressed people standing on the corner, peering anxiously toward us. When we turned into the small side street, the older members clasped their hands and stared, as if unable to believe they were seeing the arrival of full-time missionaries. They stood for a moment with tears in their eyes and then began waving excitedly. The young people ran alongside the VW bus shouting, laughing, and clapping their hands.

As we entered the small chapel, the missionaries smiled and clapped their hands as they saw a long table beautifully decorated with flowers and with plates of food—sandwiches, salads, cakes, and drinks.

Missionaries arrived in the German Democratic Republic on the last day of March 1989, and their first baptisms were held within a few days.

In many of the wards and branches, there were investigators who had become acquainted with the Church but had not yet accepted baptism. The new full-time missionaries immediately visited these people—including Angela Kalkbrenner, a young married woman from Dresden who was expecting her first child. She had been attending church with her member husband.

“Sunday after Sunday I learned more about the true gospel, but I continued to postpone my baptism,” she recalled. “Then the missionaries came to us. They taught me. They helped me recognize the Holy Ghost for the first time. It was wonderful.” (This and other quotations in this article are taken from personal letters written by converts at the request of the authors.)

There are many facets to the story of the new mission in the eastern part of Germany: persistent prayers by faithful members around the world; long, dedicated service by members in the German Democratic Republic, working in semi-isolation; careful negotiation with the government; the faith of missionaries who, with proselyting restricted, worked closely with members to find the people the Lord had prepared to receive the gospel. Perhaps the most important facet of the story, however, is the histories of the converts themselves and how they were prepared by the Spirit of the Lord.

Lydia Stapel, a young woman who was baptized into the Church said, “We have been living in darkness all our lives. Now the missionaries are bringing us light—and I want to leave that light wherever I go.” That was the feeling of many who became acquainted with the gospel as missionary work was opened in the German Democratic Republic, before the two Germanies were reunited on 3 October 1990.

Rainer Wollny first learned about the Church when he visited the new Dresden chapel during an open house on 1 May 1990. He was baptized less than a week later, after receiving the missionary lessons, reading the Book of Mormon twice from cover to cover, and gaining a testimony of it. As he attended Sunday services on the morning of May 7, “I felt for the first time what a beautiful, peaceful, and happy feeling it is to discover the entire breadth of the eternal and true gospel. When I was baptized … my heart felt so warm and pleasant that I cried as I received the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

Brother Wollny has since been ordained an elder, has converted and baptized his wife, and together they are now serving as stake missionaries.

Thomas Weitz and his wife, though not LDS at the time, took a Russian visitor to see the new LDS meetinghouse in Zwickau. A guided tour, in Russian, was arranged for them, and the Weitzes went home with a copy of the Book of Mormon. While his wife was away on vacation, Thomas began reading the book.

“As I was reading, I came upon the passage in 3 Nephi 28 (the request of the disciples of Christ). … I didn’t believe such a thing was possible. I was so doubtful that I laid the book aside and didn’t want to read it any more. But it wouldn’t let me alone. I began to read from the beginning of the book, but I couldn’t seem to concentrate. The idea came into my mind, Why don’t you just pray? So I did.” [3 Ne. 28]

He asked the Lord to help him know if this book was really true. “The next day, about 5 o’clock in the evening, the doorbell rang. I went to see who it was, and two well-dressed young men were standing at the door. They told me they were missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and that I had been praying about the Book of Mormon. I simply could not believe it. How could they know that? Our Father in Heaven had heard my prayer and had sent the missionaries.”

He joined the Church on 30 April 1989, and his wife was baptized two weeks after she returned from her vacation. “My wife and I have been working since our baptism to see that many more people can learn about the true gospel and about the plan of our Father in Heaven.”

In the fertile fields of eastern Germany, the gospel has touched people of all ages.

Birga Weber’s religious education had been typical for her generation in the German Democratic Republic, which was officially atheist. “In my family there was no one who had the slightest belief in God. And so I pushed all thoughts and feelings about God far from me, although in the depths of my heart I always hoped that there might be a God.”

This hope led 22-year-old Birga to Freiberg to attend a performance of the Lamanite Generation, a Brigham Young University performing group. She knew that the performance was sponsored by the Church. “After the performance, the missionaries asked me if I was interested in the Mormons and told me a few things about Jesus Christ, the Book of Mormon, and the gospel. In that moment I knew immediately: this is it. I was absolutely certain that I would become a Mormon. Nothing in the world could prevent me, and I felt an irresistible longing for more knowledge. This all took place in a matter of seconds, one thought after another.”

Birga Weber was baptized one week after the missionaries began teaching her. “It was not accidental that the missionaries found me just at this time. God had prepared me, and I am so thankful to him for this. I love him with all my heart.”

Anita Jander, of Dresden, had recently gone through a divorce and was left with three children to rear. One Saturday evening in June 1989, she was out for a drive with her two younger sons, ages fourteen and sixteen, when they passed by the LDS chapel “and it seemed to me as if an inner voice was calling out to me that I had to stop the car and go in.” She and her sons went into the building. “I was overwhelmed with the love and friendliness that surrounded us,” she recalls, “and I had a feeling of happiness in my heart that I had never known before. I wanted to learn more about faith, about the gospel, and about the Mormons.”

Sister Jander and her sons began studying with the missionaries. On 11 June 1989, she and fourteen-year-old Danilo were baptized. “I am so thankful that I am no longer alone, that I can turn to God with all of my sorrows and problems, and he will help me through them. … I simply could not live any more without my faith, and I am so full of joy that I would like to shout it out to the whole world—to share it with everyone,” she writes.

The theme of being lost, of being in despair, of searching, and of finally finding the light of the gospel is repeated over and over in the testimonies of converts. The struggle of Sieglinda Wochnik illustrates what has happened in many lives. She had been reared by a religious father who nevertheless rejected organized religions. When, at age twenty, she left her little village to attend a university, “God was pushed further and further into the background. I lived from day to day without taking much thought about my actions—whether they were right or wrong. And yet, I felt an emptiness within me. … I continued to search for this missing thing, for this meaning to my life.”

Eventually, Sister Wochnik came into contact with the LDS missionaries who had arrived in the German Democratic Republic. “The following Sunday I attended the meetings. … The Sunday School class and the sacrament meeting brought me more and more to the conclusion that God exists and that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. A comparison of the Book of Mormon with the Bible strengthened this conclusion. I came to realize that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the true church and that I needed to change my life.

“I became aware of the many sins I had committed and I ought to have been thankful if these sins would be forgiven me. But that was not the case.

“The truth had broken over me like a storm. I wished I could have hidden myself, and yet I knew that the truth would find me everywhere. … A battle was raging within me. I held stubbornly to my way of life, my habits, and refused to accept the gospel. I quit going to church, and I stopped praying because I was afraid of the answers I would get from my Father in Heaven. This battle lasted for three weeks. Then I wrote Elder Palmer a letter and asked him not to visit me again.

“And now comes the part that is unbelievable. I experienced a transformation of heart from one day to the next. I suddenly realized that I was trying to hold on to trifles. It became clear to me that it was the gospel for which I had been waiting. I suddenly saw baptism and the forgiveness of sins as my great chance. I realized that the laws and commandments were not given to mankind to restrict our freedom but that they were God’s challenges [to us] and that God would help me keep the commandments if I would ask him.”

Despite her letter, the missionaries came to visit her that same evening. They gave her a blessing, and the deep, warm feeling that came into her heart lingered into the next day.

“From that hour on I have changed my life. Two weeks later—on Easter Sunday—was my baptism. It was an unforgettable day. A deep sense of peace came over me. I suddenly had the feeling that I had finally come home from my long wandering,” she writes.

“I am sad when I think of all the years of my life I have wasted. I will work diligently to acquire the knowledge I need that will allow me to make the remaining years of my life meaningful.”

These are but a few testimonies of the many converts who lived in spiritual darkness before the borders of the German Democratic Republic were opened to full-time missionaries preaching the gospel. Only heaven could have foreseen the flood of spiritual light and freedom that the world-changing events in this part of Europe during the years 1988 to 1990 would bring.

THIRD NEPHI
THE BOOK OF NEPHI
THE SON OF NEPHI, WHO WAS THE SON OF HELAMAN

CHAPTER 28

Nine of the Twelve desire and are promised an inheritance in Christ’s kingdom when they died.  The Three Nephites desire and are given power over death so as to remain on the earth until Jesus comes again.  They are translated and see things not lawful to utter, and they are now ministering among men. Between A.D. 34 and 35

1 And it came to pass when Jesus had said these words, he spake unto his disciples, one by one, saying unto them: What is it that ye desire of me, after that I am gone to the Father?

2 And they all spake, save it were three, saying: We desire that after we have lived unto the age of man, that our ministry, wherein thou hast called us, may have an end, that we may speedily come unto thee in thy kingdom.

3 And he said unto them: Blessed are ye because ye desired this thing of me; therefore, after that ye are seventy and two years old ye shall come unto me in my kingdom; and with me ye shall find rest.

4 And when he had spoken unto them, he turned himself unto the three, and said unto them: What will ye that I should do unto you, when I am gone unto the Father?

5 And they sorrowed in their hearts, for they durst not speak unto him the thing which they desired.

6 And he said unto them: Behold, I know your thoughts, and ye have desired the thing which John, my beloved, who was with me in my ministry, before that I was lifted up by the Jews, desired of me.

7 Therefore, more blessed are ye, for ye shall never taste of death; but ye shall live to behold all the doings of the Father unto the children of men, even until all things shall be fulfilled according to the will of the Father, when I shall come in my glory with the powers of heaven.

8 And ye shall never endure the pains of death; but when I shall come in my glory ye shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye from mortality to immortality; and then shall ye be blessed in the kingdom of my Father.

9 And again, ye shall not have pain while ye shall dwell in the flesh, neither sorrow save it be for the sins of the world; and all this will I do because of the thing which ye have desired of me, for ye have desired that ye might bring the souls of men unto me, while the world shall stand.

  10 And for this cause ye shall have fulness of joy; and ye shall sit down in the kingdom of my Father; yea, your joy shall be full, even as the Father hath given me fulness of joy; and ye shall be even as I am, and I am even as the Father; and the Father and I are one;

11 And the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and the Father giveth the Holy Ghost unto the children of men, because of me.

12 And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words, he touched every one of them with his finger save it were the three who were to tarry, and then he departed.

13 And behold, the heavens were opened, and they were caught up into heaven, and saw and heard unspeakable things.

  14 And it was forbidden them that they should utter; neither was it given unto them power that they could utter the things which they saw and heard;

15 And whether they were in the body or out of the body, they could not tell; for it did seem unto them like a transfiguration of them, that they were changed from this body of flesh into an immortal state, that they could behold the things of God.

16 But it came to pass that they did again minister upon the face of the earth; nevertheless they did not minister of the things which they had heard and seen, because of the commandment which was given them in heaven.

  17 And now, whether they were mortal or immortal, from the day of their transfiguration, I know not;

18 But this much I know, according to the record which hath been given they did go forth upon the face of the land, and did minister unto all the people, uniting as many to the church as would believe in their preaching; baptizing them, and as many as were baptized did receive the Holy Ghost.

19 And they were cast into prison by them who did not belong to the church. And the prisons could not hold them, for they were rent in twain.

20 And they were cast down into the earth; but they did smite the earth with the word of God, insomuch that by his power they were delivered out of the depths of the earth; and therefore they could not dig pits sufficient to hold them.

21 And thrice they were cast into a furnace and received no harm.

22 And twice were they cast into a den of wild beasts; and behold they did play with the beasts as a child with a suckling lamb, and received no harm.

23 And it came to pass that thus they did go forth among all the people of Nephi, and did preach the gospel of Christ unto all people upon the face of the land; and they were converted unto the Lord, and were united unto the church of Christ, and thus the people of that generation were blessed, according to the word of Jesus.

24 And now I, Mormon, make an end of speaking concerning these things for a time.

25 Behold, I was about to write the names of those who were never to taste of death, but the Lord forbade; therefore I write them not, for they are hid from the world.

26 But behold, I have seen them, and they have ministered unto me.

27 And behold they will be among the Gentiles, and the Gentiles shall know them not.

28 They will also be among the Jews, and the Jews shall know them not.

29 And it shall come to pass, when the Lord seeth fit in his wisdom that they shall minister unto all the scattered tribes of Israel, and unto all nations, kindreds, tongues and people, and shall bring out of them unto Jesus many souls, that their desire may be fulfilled, and also because of the convincing power of God which is in them.

30 And they are as the angels of God, and if they shall pray unto the Father in the name of Jesus they can show themselves unto whatsoever man it seemeth them good.

  31 Therefore, great and marvelous works shall be wrought by them, before the great and coming day when all people must surely stand before the judgment-seat of Christ;

32 Yea even among the Gentiles shall there be a great and marvelous work wrought by them, before that judgment day.

33 And if ye had all the scriptures which give an account of all the marvelous works of Christ, ye would, according to the words of Christ, know that these things must surely come.

  34 And wo be unto him that will not hearken unto the words of Jesus, and also to them whom he hath chosen and sent among them; for whoso receiveth not the words of Jesus and the words of those whom he hath sent receiveth not him; and therefore he will not receive them at the last day;

35 And it would be better for them if they had not been born. For do ye suppose that ye can get rid of the justice of an offended God, who hath been trampled under feet of men, that thereby salvation might come?

36 And now behold, as I spake concerning those whom the Lord hath chosen, yea, even three who were caught up into the heavens, that I knew not whether they were cleansed from mortality to immortality

  37 But behold, since I wrote, I have inquired of the Lord, and he hath made it manifest unto me that there must needs be a change wrought upon their bodies, or else it needs be that they must taste of death;

38 Therefore, that they might not taste of death there was a change wrought upon their bodies, that they might not suffer pain nor sorrow save it were for the sins of the world.

39 Now this change was not equal to that which shall take place at the last day; but there was a change wrought upon them, insomuch that Satan could have no power over them, that he could not tempt them; and they were sanctified in the flesh, that they were holy, and that the powers of the earth could not hold them.

40 And in this state they were to remain until the judgment day of Christ; and at that day they were to receive a greater change, and to be received into the kingdom of the Father to go no more out, but to dwell with God eternally in the heavens.

Hello! My name is Matt Duffy. I served with Parker for a couple transfers. He always talked about you and how you are the best missionary ever! So I figured I better add you as my friend! Tell him hello for me!

Matt,

I just got home from a Mother/Son Convert Baptism. I offered the benediction and stood as a witness to the baptisms.

Marietta Ultotvaldez and her son Sean Perez age 9.

I remember when we first showed her where the church was and invited her to come the next Sunday!!!  I weep when I think of the beauty of it all.

She also has a beautiful daughter named Shaylyn - we have to wait another 4 1/2 years... ...yeah... ...she's 3 1/2.

Best Missionary Ever... ...He said the same thing about you... ...and I'm going from memory here but the first time you served together and I think Elder Woodhead was getting his visa renewed so there was three of you (You, Parker and I can't remember who else) but you decided to tract one last flight of stairs in the дом and nobody wood open the doors so you were all preaching to/through the doors and you were laughing and the бабушка ты were trying to talk to about Кнйга Мормона was getting upset and you had to run away from your door.  I have thought about that a million times... ...and although we are supposed to be serious... ...I would have been laughing andf running with you because the idea of three men in suits all preaching to doors in Russian is... ..FUNNY... ...and when Parker was worried about leaving his son (Elder Tilgner) and going to a new area... ...he basically said there had never been more jubilation in the realm of mission tranfers for the entire history of the world than when you two were put back together.  Didin't you two whitewash the area you transferred into? My memory's a bit rusty.

Here's what I've been posting to some of the other's... ...my Russian isn't as good as it should be and I need to get these pages updated... ..but I have 3 callings now - yep a Triple-Combination and I'm working on the quad.

1 - Ward Missionary - August 9, 2009 - Present
2 - Scouting Committee Member - August 22, 2010 - Present
3 - Family History Specialist - September 5, 2010 ~ Present

Service is a blessing for the receiver and the giver.

Robie Jarman Smith
Be CAREFUL!!! It's VERY addictive! I've been doing it for a year and a half.

Brett Martin Smith
Yes... ...but I've been addicted to worse things and lived through it... ...I think... ...hey... ...call me... ...if I hear the phone then I'm still alive right... ...haven't heard the phone in a while... ...but I don't remember dying... ......the dilemma of living alone... ...I don't have any kinfolk to tell me "Jed, move away from there!!! They say heaven's for ya!!! That's the place ya oughtta be... ...leave behind this earthly home for one more heavenly... ...Celestial Rules... ...Moving Stars... ...The Heavenly Hillbillys

I've been indexing about a year... ...but now I will be sustained and set apart as a Family History Specialist to go with the other callings... ...Sunday I'll have the Triple Combination but I'm going for the Quad as I am trying to get called to work down on the Temple Grounds for two hours every Saturday.

Today I indexed 10 batches in a fourin langwidge - indexing in tongues - I set a goal to index 100 names a day... ...and I wanted to get a good start today to make up for those days when I just won't do it... ...so 250 names today puts me 150 ahead... ...I'll get faster when I get set apart... ...I'll have to wear a helmet and goggles and put a seatbelt on... ...the Distribution Center has a sale going right now on all Indexing Protective Clothing as a part of the Labor Day Sale-a-thon.

Subject: guaranteed to make you smile

Kristi,

Thanks for giving me the courage to stand for righteousness!!!

You too Parker!!!

I am truly blessed to have such great teachers as my children!!!

I received and email that was unacceptable ~ and I responded back ~ read on!

Love ~ Dad

Please do not send these emails to me... ...I like my Temple Recommend to remain in good standing... ...thank goodness there were no children with me when I opened this email from a Latter Day Saint with the subject line that reads "Guaranteed To Make You Smile".

I love you but I just don't see how you can send something like this to me... ...or anybody... ...but I forgive you.  Now it's between you and Father.  I'll let you in on a little secret... ...I've come to find this out from doing things wrong far more times than I can even remember... ...what I do remember is that with a broken heart and a contrite spirit... ...Father will forgive us when we make a mistake... ...I know He does... ...and I have done far worse than this and He still loves me and blesses me... ...and His Son's atoning sacrifice is for everyone... ...sometimes I cry because I cannot believe all that I have been forgiven.

I will share a story... ...many years ago I was driving in my Suburban with my children.  Parker was about 7-8 and Kristi 5-6.  Someone in another vehicle did something, I don't even remember what it was at this point, and I said something about them being a donkey... ...if you know what I mean... ...Kristi promptly spoke up and said:

"Dad... ...you said a bad word!"

"What?"

"You said a bad word!"

"What bad word?"

"The 'A' word dad!  You taught us to never say a bad word and you said a bad word."

"It's not a real bad word Kristi..."

"Dad..."

I looked at Kristi as a tear rolled down her cheek... ...and at that moment... ...I had a broken heart and contrite spirit.  Not just for what I had said, and tried to minimize... ...but also for breaking my sweet little angels trust in me.   She turned her head and looked out the window into the dark night.  I told her she was right.  I told her I was wrong.  I asked her to forgive me.  I told her I would repent.

The rest of the drive home was quiet.  When we got home she got out of the Suburban, went in the house and went to bed without looking at me or saying another word.  I told her I loved her and said goodnight.  I got on my knees and said the family prayer so she could hear my plea...

"Father... ...thank you for all that you do for us, for thy Son who made it possible for us to be forgiven when we do something wrong.  Thank you for my children whom you have trusted me to love and raise in righteousness.  Thank you for giving Kristi the courage it takes to stand for righteousness.  Bless her and Parker for all their righteous desires.  Forgive me for saying a bad word and for feeling ill feelings for that other driver.  Help me to forgive that driver and to do better in the future. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen."

In the morning Kristi came and gave me a hug and told me she loved me.  She never brought that night up again... ...because she had forgiven me.

Brother Name Withheld... ...I love you... ...you have a good heart... ...try to be a little more careful.  See you on Sunday!

Your Brother - Brett

Here's a picture of Kristi from around that time frame... ...taken on a Father/Daughter outing... ...I owe my children more than I can repay... ...and love them more than they know.

Subject: Today has been a busy day

Today has been a busy day... ...but all in line with the Sabbath... ...It started with prayer and reading instruction on how to perform the ordinance of confirming one as a member of Christ's church and conferring upon them the gift of the Holy Ghost... ...why?  Because Marietta who was baptized with her son Sean last Sunday evening asked me if I would do it.  I said I would.  I read and then took a shower and put my suit on before I went to Choir Practice at Bishop Steve Walters' house at... ...he is the High Priest Group Leader... ...his wife Claudia recently ran for Mayor of Mesa but was not elected. :-( Their daughter Wendy who is an adult and lives in her own home but holds Choir Practice at her parents house for various reasons is the Choir Director... ...not to be confused with the Chorister who is Jamie and sometimes her dad Scott when she's not there... ...but she is usually there.

After, I rode with Brother Chavez, Ward Mission Leader, and Brother James, Assistant
Ward Mission Leader over to Jennifer's and her niece and nephew Scott and Gracie's... ...the latter two are members (I helped them move last week)... ...the former is an investigator and has been to church a time or two... ...Jennifer had called me to ask for a blessing because she has been sick but said it was okay to come after Choir Practice.  We got there just as Jennifer was getting ready to take Gracie to urgent care... ...I got my ordinance cards out of my wallet and got my keys with my vial... ...I opened my vial and the glass on the inside had broke (A second one I bought last week cause I misplaced the first one... ...This second one the elders told me that they had one like that which had broke - and now mine did the same thing - I'll be taking it back tomorrow).  Jennifer said she had oil and I asked her if it had been consecrated and she wasn't sure.  Both Mike and David had oil that we knew was consecrated so we opted for that... ...I explained about the Power of the Priesthood being the Authority to Act in God's Name... ...that it is the same Power He called upon to create the heavens and the earth, the same power that Jesus called upon to heal the blind lady and the lepers,  the same Power that my son called upon to bless his prodigal father to lose the desire to smoke.  (Thanks again... ...still no desire and no Nicorette gum... ...I can stand next to people who are smoking as I share this testimony and even then I have no desire to smoke.) So for Jennifer, Mike annointed and I sealed and for Gracie I annointed and David sealed... ...he is a convert and was ordained an Elder last year and I had suggested to Mike earlier that we invite David to help... ...he was nervous, as I am too, but we all helped each other because that's what Priesthood is about - helping others.

(I just helped a cute baby cricket off my bed.)

Then it was home for a bit and then off to church... ...I like to be there early to greet people, say hello, cool off, get in the Spirit etcetera... ...and this day I had to set up my display before Sacrament Meeting started... ...you see... ...at the Church Distribution Web Site there is a plethora (Wait, did he say plethora?)  yes, a plethora of items for FREE... ...that's right FREE. SWAG - But most people do not even know this... ...but I'm a ferret and I like FREE LDS stuff... ..."Why?" You ask!   Because it's LDS and it's what... ...that's right FREE.  so I got 5 boxes shipped FedEx  about 50 lbs of LDS literature and how much did it cost me?  Nope. it cost me $4.02... ...because on top of the FREE stuff I ordered one Mormons Bog (Danish Book of Mormon. Hardcover $3.00) and I ordered The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles 11Ť x 17Ť $0.15 (8.5x11 are free) and I ordered The Family: A Proclamation to the World 11Ť x 17Ť $0.50 (8.5x11 are free) and I ordered Estimated Sales Tax... ...Well, I didn't order it but they charged me for it any ways  Estimated Sales Tax $0.37.  And why is most of the stuff FREE... ...because it is... ...and Father along with Brother and others want this FREE stuff to be read... ...WHY?  Because.   Now, I received permission to set this stuff out there for free.

Just saw your email come in Parker so I'll shoot this off and finish in the next one

Real quick -- all but 5 or 6 items out of VERY MANY were taken home because other people like FREE LDS stuff too.  Most of the stuff I set out today was FAMILY HISTORY/GENEALOGY and TEMPLE WORK/TEMPLE PREP.  As you read through the list you will be able to see which stuff I set out today... ...and I have MORE OTHER LDS ITEMS for next week while I wait for a new order to replace these items that were scooped up today.  WAY COOL!!!  I knew it would be a big hit.

I Confirmed/Conferred Marietta.  Elder Harrison Confirmed/Conferred her son Sean.

Then there was a sweet Primary Program.

I went with Full Timers at 7:00/8:00 tonight.

7:00 was Janice - I suggested this to the FTers before and we worked it in tonight. Debbie in the Ward is her sister... ...I have known them since I was a kid... ...Lori was my age... ...anyways we went over there... ...Janice was happy to see us and knew who I was... ...she was touched by the Spirit as we talked with her and her husband... ...I didn't even notice but she was at church today before we went over there... ...we are scheduled to go back Tuesday at 6:00 pm... ...I knew I felt the Spirit guiding me.

8:00pm we visited Lance and Jennifer... ...she is way into learning... ...Lance is a member... ...Jennifer had us all sing a Christmas Song... ...it was way cool... ...felt like Christmas as we sang Silent Night... ...Jennifer asked for a blessing and I shared about the Power of the Priesthood again as I had done earlier with Gracie and Jennifer.  We gave her a blessing.  Her husband Lance is scheduled to baptize her on October 16th.  Time yet to be TBD.  We meet with them again on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.

Came home and got a call from Jennifer asking if I could find a ride for Scott and Gracie from Desert Banner Hospital on Dobson by MCC as her car started acting up.  I asked if they had a phone so I could call and find out their Home Teacher's but they don't have a Cell Phone.  So I got on the horn to President Walbom of the Elder's Quorum as Scott is a part of that group... ...I explained to him the situation and that in the near future I will be able to answer the call in that situation but he understood and said that I was in the High Priest's Group anyway and I said that didn't matter to me (Last week I attended Elder's Quorum just because and they were taking pictures of each one with contact information so that's why I hung around so they would be able to contact me... ...even the Prophet is Only An Elder - our Chief Elder is Jesus Christ")

Got more Missionarying tomorrow at 3:00 and I think tomorrow night at 7:00.

Cannery assignment on Wednesday.

Temple is closed for two weeks (And there was much sadness for the space of two weeks)(Except I'm too happy to be sad.)

I don't think I will be able to go to General Conference - I have no way to get there.  (More sadness except I'm too happy to be sad - I hope I will be able to give them to somebody else to go.   I'll have to wait until Spring.)

Yup... ...a good Sabbath Day.

Subject: Weekly Update

Lots of good things going on out here in the Gorlovka/Lugansk Zone.

First off we had a zone fast this past week to help us get ready for all the stuff we have going on. Thanks to much prayer and fasting of these righteous missionaries, we were able to have two successful baptisms this past Saturday, and then two successful confirmations on Sunday. It's a fact that "sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven".

As for the life of Elder Barton and I, things are going well. Finally got to meet with our good friend Aleks this past week, who has had a testimony of the truthfulness of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for quite some time now, but is still patiently awaiting his 18th birthday in January to become a member of such a marvelous work. He is basically a member already, so we have plans on taking him on lessons with us and what not. So that's him. Then there is Kristina who is solid (most Kristina's that I have met in my lifetime seem to be that way). So she was invited to English a few months back, and came for her first time this Tuesday. She is a bit shy, but super friendly... fit right in with the other young women from the branch. After English practice, one of the newly baptized youth and I were talking with her, and she was way interested in finding out more, so the member gave out her first Book of Mormon and invited Kristina to read, and then we set up a lesson for the next day. Before that lesson, she had already read more than we had asked her to, and the Spirit was strong as the two youth that were present shared their stories of how they came to know about the Gospel, restored to the Earth in its fulness. Then she came to church on Sunday and the members were so great, welcoming her in, making her feel comfortable, inviting her to General Conference this next week. She just had a big ol' smile on her face the whole time. So that's her. Then there's Igor, the accordion man. We were able to meet with him a couple times this past week, and one thing that was mentioned on his teaching record and also that we found out for ourselves is that there is a lot that he isn't pleased with in the world (so there is the occasional murmuring that comes from him). These past couple lessons we have focused on helping him recognize the good in the world as well as helping him understand that God is just and merciful as well, and that we should be the same. There is a gradual change taking place in his attitude... he's gaining the attitude of gratitude. I too have that same attitude because he also came to church this Sunday and participated really well in the classes. Lots of potential. And I can't forget Ivan Ivanovich. We wanted to watch a film with him and his wife, but their tv is too old and didn't have a place to hook up the DVD player, so instead we just decided to talk about the Restoration, and he is so great. He gets so into the lessons (even though he's 80). We didn't quite get to talk about Joseph Smith and his experience because Ivan was a bit taken back by the idea of an apostasy. He didn't disagree with it, he just asked that we give him some time to take in everything that we had already said. So we complied, and explained that the next time we meet (tonight), we have the rest of the story that makes everything alright in life... the happy ending to that apostasy. Yup yup. Then several other people that we have found and begun meeting with, but nothing really worth mentioning as of right now.

Oh, I'll give a real quick update on Marina (I know this may be more interesting to some than to others, but it's still good stuff, so enjoy). Alrighty, so like I said, Elder Tilgner was the man out there in Lugansk for helping Marina and her family feel comfortable at church (as well as some of the members out there), and they had an overall good experience. Elder Tilgner also took care of business and invited Marina to a few activities that they have weekly, like the Monday Family Night at the branch as well as English on Wednesdays, and of course church on Sunday. I talked to Marina during the week and she expressed that it was a bummer that she couldn't attend any of these things during the past week because of conflicting plans, but she expressed her desire to plan ahead for this week to make sure that she can attend this time around (I'm not sure which ones she was referring to that she wants to attend, but I'm praying that it's all three). Also she sent an email to the Harrison family, the wonderful people that have made this whole experience possible (with a bit of help from God), and in this email she explained how thrilled she was that the missionaries were able to come visit and spend some time with her family. The family really openned up to the church (still have their own beliefs, but it's a step), and we'll see what takes place in the coming days, weeks, months... Hoping that I'll get another chance to pay that city and family a visit before my departure (which I won't accept is as soon as it is).

Well, that's my life as of right now. I know that what I am doing out here serves as a testimony of what I know to be true.

Peace, love, and happiness,
Elder Parker Martin Smit

My companions Elder Harrison/Brigham City, Utah and Elder Gilbert/Idaho Falls, Idaho were kind enough to bring their cameras and snap some pictures – I hope these are alright.  We were in a hurry to meet with some investigators so I quickly took off my cowboy hat and stuck my head under some water to eliminate the ‘Hat-Hair’.  Looks like I need a hair cut too.

Elder Harrison snapped the pictures and said “Brother Smith, You look like a Roman Soldier!”  I said I look more like a meal for the lions.

Thanks!!!

Were raised into heaven like the City of Enoch?

Elder Son,

President Thomas S. Monson was called to be
a Bishop at age 22, an Apostle at age 36.

Be ready and worthy when the call comes.

If God were to call me to be His Prophet today could I answer the call?

With a resounding yes – I could and would answer the call.

If God were to call me to clean the filthiest commodes
In earth with a toothpick could I answer the call?

With a resounding yes – I could and would answer the call.

And I would find the same joy in either calling…
...because I would be where the Lord needs me?

I would magnify either calling… …I would lead His church the way the Spirit would guide me… …and I would clean those commodes with that mighty toothpick for it would be my sword of battle… …and I would smile… …because God loves me more than I can comprehend, and he blesses me more than I deserve.

In case I haven’t told you recently…

…I love you more than you can comprehend…

…but you will know it when you become a father…

…and at that defining moment you become a dad.

I am proud of you…

…I have been since the moment I knew you existed…

…it’s an honor to be your father… …and your dad.

The sign reads as follows:

Anyone can be a father…
…but it takes someone special to be a “dad”.

This means that a father can be made even by way of artificial insemination…

But a dad is born only by way of his interaction with those he fathered.

I really messed up for 5 years… …Nothing I can ever do will make up for that.

When your mother left this earth I wondered how I could ever fill her shoes…

The Lord let me know that it wasn’t her shoes that I needed to fill.

And so I vow each day that I will fill my own.

~ The House of the Lord ~ Holiness to the Lord ~

Today was all that I imagined... ...and more...

...I became empowered with the gift of childhood wonder...

...and will return Tuesday to the House of my Lord and again drink of His Light.

 Elder Brett Martin Smith

Saturday, July 31st, 2010 I went through the Mesa Arizona Temple for the First Time for myself.

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010 I went through the Mesa Arizona Temple for the First Time for another.

Friday, August 6th, 2010 I went through the Mesa Arizona Temple for the First Time for another.

On Tuesday and Friday, upon entering the Celestial Room, I immersed myself in prayer wherein I shared my testimony and asked Father if He would carry my message, Heart to Heart, Spirit to Spirit into the hearts of these men.  I have vowed to always go through in proxy with that same “childhood wonder” I had when I went through for myself.  Each time I will be clean, alert, awake… …taking in the sights and sounds, looking around at the beauty of it all as I walk where Jesus walks… …each time I go through – It is the first time… For each time it is for a brother who is going through for the first time… …a brother for whom I am honored and privileged to be there in his stead.  I will never take it lightly.  How blessed we are, that while in earth we have the opportunity to share the gospel to those who are on either side of the veil… in earth or in paradise… the Holy Spirit can carry the message of truth to all who will listen.

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Again I was blessed to go through the Mesa Arizona Temple for the First Time for another.

After... ...I stopped in and visited with President Garn of the Mesa Arizona Temple and shared my feelings and testimony with him.  I also had questions for him... ...and he had answers for me.  Thanks President Garn!!!

Friday, August 13, 2010 is Hillside Ward Temple Night.

Guess where you will find this Ward Missionary at 6:00 pm?

We need to encourage our youth to learn as much as they can about the Temple and ask their parents to take them to the visitors center regularly.  We need to encourage those who don't have a current Temple recommend to get one if they are worthy or to get worthy if they are not.   We need to encourage those who have a current Temple recommend to use it... ...it does us nor those who have passed on, without having been privileged to go through, any good just collecting dust in our wallets and purses, desks and drawers.

This is my Testimony and my Prayer I leave with you

In the Holy Name of  our Lord, and Savior

Jesus Christ, Amen

My mistake... ...So much for getting translated today... ;-) ...Hillside Ward Temple Night is TONIGHT not last night... ...You know what that means... ...it means that I will be there tonight at 6:00 pm as well... ...last night I wasn't sure if I got there too late to go through with the Hillside Ward... ...I was there just a couple minutes after 6:00 pm and made it to the Assembly Room at 6:30 sharp (Is there a 6:30 dull?)... ...at that point I had just missed the 6:30 pm Session and thought that maybe I misunderstood what being there at 6:00 pm means... ...does it mean that I should be in the Assembly Room ready to go for the 6:00 pm Session or arrive at 6:00 pm and be ready for the 6:30 pm Session?

Well... ...now there has been a change of plans... ...I just got a call from my companions Elders Harrison/Gilbert and our appointment with Chrystal has been pushed back to 6:00 pm... ...so... ...I may come after we meet with her or go through a Session prior to that.  If anyone wants to attend an earlier session with me - give me a call - I could use a ride down there and back as I am currently waiting for my Jeep to be repaired by my neighbor Ian Thomas... ...he's a factory certified mechanic with over 20 years experience and he is the kind of mechanic that will manufacture a specialty tool if one is needed to get the job done... ...that's what he did while working on the Jeep... ...He welded himself a tool to enable him to get to some of the oil pan bolts being blocked by the motor mount on the right side... ...awesome... he currently has the gas tank removed for a proper cleaning after it sat for 7 years (I told you those oil pan bolts were being blocked.)... ...last month I had him fix my daughter Kristi's car making it safe for her to drive to Orem, Utah for the Campbell family reunion... ...he put on new brake pads and rotors, tire rotation, new oil & filter, new air filter, two new O2 Sensors and a partridge in a pear tree.  Next I will have him start on my Suburban - needs a head gasket - or maybe I'll do it - we'll see.  Anyways... ...some of you may have met him and Diana Uchtdorf as they came over to the Lehi Stake Center for my ordination to an Elder.  Yes, she is President Uchtdorf's niece and she is not a member of the church... ...yet... ...We're working on that ("We're" as in the Spirit prompts me and I'm learning not to argue those promptings - after all, why argue with the Spirit who is also the 2nd counselor in the most Powerful, Loving, Spiritual Presidency in the universe?  Doesn't make sense to not go to bat when a member of the Godhead says it's our turn to pinch hit... ...so what if we've been struck out before... ...in the World Series would you rather step into the batter's box with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth or watch from the bleachers?  Brethren... We are in the World Series and it IS the bottom of the ninth.  The bases are loaded... ...for the field of dreams is ripe and ready to harvest.  If you get a little nervous about going out to the batter's box... ...take a look at who's in the dugout with you... ...Adam, Enoch, Moses, Melchizedek, Abraham, Elijah, Isaiah, Aaron, Ezekiel, Noah, John,-The Baptist, Peter, James, John, Ether, Mahonri Moriancumer, Jared, Lehi, Nephi, Alma, Helaman, Mormon, Moroni, Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Parley Parker Pratt, John Taylor, Brigham Young, David O. McKay, Spencer W. Kimball, Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas S. Monson, Henry B. Eyring, Deiter F. Uchtdorf, Boyd k. Packer, Jeffrey R. Holland, Neil L. Maxwell and many more World Champions... ...We know who wrote the playbook... ...we know who the Head Coach is... ...Jesus, The Christ... ...God is our General Manager.)  Now back to Ian and Diana... I have been befriending them and sharing the gospel with them since the first time their roommate "Red" rode up on his bicycle the day they started to move in... ...I was on my way to church but stopped long enough to get Red a cold drink from my house and share my testimony along with giving him a copy of the Book of Mormon.  So... ...if you need quality work done without breaking the bank - turn it into a missionary opportunity - let's get 'r' done.  I an and Diana's Phone number is 480-430-0199.  They live at 70 West June - North East Corner of June/Macdonald.  On his business card it reads "The last mechanic you will ever need."  When you share the gospel with him... ...tell him it's the last gospel he will ever need!!!

What a joy it was to be among the 120 men/women/children at the Temple this morning.  What a joy it was to serve with you in keeping our Temple to our Lord looking beautiful.

If any of you noticed the woman with some plastic bags sitting on the grass at the North East Corner of the Temple Grounds wearing gray sweat pants and a Budweiser T-Shirt... ...her name is Vivian... ...she is from Virginia... ...she was raised Catholic but has also attended the Baptist church... ...She has three children which she loves and wants them all to be happy... ...If they lived in three remote areas of the world she would still want them all to know that she loves them and if she knew what would make them happy she would want them all to have that message of hope.   She would not want to leave any of them out of knowing and feeling her love and desire for their well being... ...just as God does for us as we are scattered across this beautiful campus known as earth.  I shared with her the beauty of three testaments.

The Bible consisting of two testaments to the divinity of Jesus Christ.

The Old Testament starting with the story of our creation and continued prophesying of the One who would come to the earth as God in the flesh - a Prophet, yea, even a Messiah.

The bittersweet New Testament with John-The Baptist preparing the way... with the birth of a new Star in the heavens... ...with the baby Jesus born to the virgin Mary in a stable... ...by this we see that where we are born is not important... ...what we do after we are born is key... ...His mortal ministry where He established His church upon the earth... ...Where he taught that each of us are loved by Father unconditionally... ...Jesus Himself is not loved anymore by Father than we are... ...Jesus did not say I am the Son of God and you are not so I am better than you.... ...He said I am the Son of God, and each of you are my brothers and sisters, children of a living God... ...all it takes is Faith... ...Come, Peter, Follow me... ...for we are the same in the eyes of God... ...He has not promised Jesus more than is promised to us... ...for we, just as Jesus, have been promised ALL that Father has, We, just as Jesus, may become ALL that Father is, by obedience to the Laws and Ordinances of the Gospel... ...God did not promise us everything and promise Jesus 'more' than everything... ...and that brings us to and explains just how much of an unmatched and selfless act of service our Elder Brother, Jesus, rendered on our behalf in the Garden of Gethsemane where he stood in proxy for each of us individually... ...bleeding from every pore... ...feeling... ...every sin and every sorrow, every guilt and every shame, every fear and every addiction, every hardship and every handicap, every pain and every horror, every emptiness and every loneliness known to man and His reward is the same as ours - To be One with the Father... and He laid down His own life on the cross... ...and took it up again three days later... ...so that we may all be victorious of death.

The Book Of Mormon being another testament of the role of Jesus Christ as our Savior and the founding of His church in Ancient America when he descended from heaven a resurrected being and taught the inhabitants thereof.

What a blessing it is to have this third testament... ...unadulterated poetry from God's mouth to our ears by way of the Prophets.

This is my testimony and my prayer, that we will continually open these three testaments,

That we may become harmonious in the psalms of salvation that are sung throughout those sacred pages,

And with an eye single to our Father-in-Heaven we will let the world know why we are members

Of the only Church that affirms authority based on specific revelation and commission

To use the Lord's Holy Name as a distinctive designation

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

And I leave them with you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Temple Blessings

By President Dieter F. Uchtdorf Second Counselor in the First Presidency

Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Temple Blessings,” Liahona, Aug 2010, 4–6

I can still remember when my parents took our family to the newly erected Swiss Temple, the first in Europe, to become a forever family. I was 16 then and the youngest of four children. We knelt together at the altar to be sealed on earth by the power of the priesthood, with a wonderful promise that we could be sealed for eternity. I will never forget this magnificent moment.

As a boy I was quite impressed that we crossed country borders to be sealed as a family. To me it symbolizes the way temple work crosses worldly boundaries to bring eternal blessings to all the inhabitants of the earth. The temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are truly built for the benefit of all the world, irrespective of nationality, culture, or political orientation.

Temples are an unyielding witness that goodness will prevail. President George Q. Cannon (1827–1901), First Counselor in the First Presidency, once said, “Every foundation stone that is laid for a Temple, and every Temple completed … lessens the power of Satan on the earth, and increases the power of God and Godliness.”1

While each temple increases the influence of righteousness in the earth, the greatest blessings, of course, come to those who actually attend the temple. There we receive further light and knowledge and make solemn covenants that, if followed, help us walk in the path of discipleship. In short, the temple teaches us about the sacred purpose of life and helps us get our true physical and spiritual bearings.

We do not attend the temple for ourselves only, however. Each time we enter these sacred edifices, we play a role in the hallowed, redemptive work of salvation made available to all of God’s children as a result of the Atonement of the Only Begotten of the Father. This is a selfless and holy service and one that allows us as mortals to participate in the glorious work of becoming saviors on Mount Zion.

For those who cannot attend the temple now for whatever reason, I encourage you to do everything in your power to hold a current temple recommend. The temple recommend is a symbol of our faithfulness and determination to serve the Lord. It is a symbol of our love for the Lord, for as Jesus taught, “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him” (John 14:21).

As the landscape of the world continues to become beautified with these sacred buildings consecrated to the Lord, it is my prayer that we will do our part in bringing heaven closer to earth by being worthy to hold a temple recommend and using it. As we do so, righteousness will surely increase not only in our lives and homes but in our communities and throughout the world.

Teaching from This Message

Most people learn better and remember longer when you present ideas using visual aids rather than merely speaking (see Teaching, No Greater Call [1999], 182). During the lesson, consider displaying a picture of a temple. After reading the article, discuss why the temple is important to President Uchtdorf. Invite young children in the family to draw a picture of their family at the temple.

Teaching, No Greater Call states, “Encourage those you teach to set one or more goals that can help them live the principle you have taught” (159). Consider reading President Uchtdorf’s message with the family and inviting family members to write down a personal goal that will help them remain worthy to hold and use a temple recommend.

A View from Higher Ground

By Mindy Raye Holmes

Mindy Raye Holmes, “A View from Higher Ground,” Liahona, Aug. 2010, 6

As a youth I had many opportunities to perform baptisms for the dead in the San Diego California Temple. Though I always had a good experience, one trip in particular stands out in my mind.

I was 16, and my little sister had just turned 12 and was making her first trip to do baptisms for the dead. Since it was her first time, we decided to walk around the outside of the temple after we finished.

The temple grounds have a couple of lookout points on one side, so we walked over there. Because the San Diego Temple is situated next to a busy highway, when you stand at a lookout point, you actually look down at the freeway.

Standing on the temple’s higher ground that day gave me a new perspective on life. I was looking down at the world with its whizzing cars, crowded shopping centers, and graffiti-covered road signs.

It was then that the thought came to my mind: “You don’t want to be a part of that; it’s not what life is about.” I had always been taught that the purpose of life is to return to live with our Heavenly Father and become like Him. I knew I didn’t need the things of the world to accomplish that purpose.

I turned around and looked at the beautiful temple, and I was grateful for the knowledge of the gospel and the perspective it gave me. I knew that in the midst of the chaotic and treacherous world, I had found higher ground to stand on.

That day at the temple I promised my Heavenly Father that I would always stand on His side and not the world’s. No matter what the world throws at us, we can overcome it by keeping the covenants we have made and by standing in holy places (see D&C 87:8).

Making the World More Beautiful

“Making the World More Beautiful,” Liahona, Aug. 2010, 6

President Uchtdorf said that when a temple is built, it increases God’s power on the earth and makes the world a more beautiful place. Color the picture below. The foundation stones under the temple describe some of the beautiful blessings the temple gives people. As you live worthy to go to the temple someday, each of these blessings can be yours!

A place of love and beauty

Baptism for people who weren’t baptized while they were alive

A marriage that can last forever

Children sealed to parents forever

A place to learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ

A worthy, obedient life

THE ARTICLES OF FAITH OF
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

History of the Church
Vol. 4, pp. 535—541

1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. 7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

I also hope for it to be a guide to those who are seeking for the truth, for those who want to learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and|or for those who need guidance in joining the church and Becoming LDS.

Elder Parker Martin Smith
Ukraine Donetsk Mission
PO Box 30150
Salt Lake City, UT 84130

This address is done through a pouch service, so do not include anything but the following.

Postcards or Single sheet of paper written on one side, folded tri-fold (blank side out) with 2 small pieces of tape at seam, leaving ends open, 1 stamp. Write info above on center, include complete return address at top left corner.

How does pouch mail work?

The Church offers a free mail delivery service called "pouch mail" for letters to missionaries serving in countries where regular mail services are not reliable. Each week, they send one box of letters to each pouch mission office, with aims for more successful, timely letter delivery.

Pouch mail is sent out every Monday, but letters must be submitted by noon the previous Thursday to get into the Monday batch.

Ukraine Donetsk Mission is a necessary part of the address for the Church to know which box of letters to put your letter in.

To send packages or anything of that sort use the following address:

Elder Parker Martin Smith
Prospekt Bogdana Khmelnitskogo 67A
Donetsk, Ukraine 83087

Do Not Include the words
"Ukraine Donetsk Mission".

If you do it will be returned!!!

Also know that most packages that are sent mid-November through mid-January will be opened and have items stolen before they reach the mission office. This happens often at other times of the year but almost ALWAYS at this time of year.
